(I have all the correct 3.5mm to RCA cables already.)

HDMI cable plugged in disables the A/V output.

No it doesn't. I have a NowTV box plugged into my old Samsung TV which does not have HDMI (but does have DVI). I use an HDMI to DVI cable for video, and the A/V output for audio. Works fine

5.1 output requires HDMI but 2 channel stereo can be output from the AV port at the same time as using HDMI for video.

The Now TV box has a/v out via 3.5 jack to rca so there is no reason why audio output is not possible whether it is possible to run both HDMI and 3.5 jack concurrently is another matter and I think you will have to either e-mail support or find someone who has one to try it for you

That's what I'm hoping that someone has one and possibly can check, my gut feeling is that it should work, but googleing has been inconclusive.

I've read the same on the Now TV forum but it was a just a little inconclusive and I want to double make sure before buying.

Hi, did you ever manage to check if you could have audio via the AV whilst using HDMI for the picture?

Sorry completely forgot about this, I remember you can buy a av cable from sky that will save you having to use the HDMI, so my guess would be you can use 1 or the other but not both at the same time.

I don't know how you found this question all these months later but thank you that's exactly what I wanted to know.

To qualify my answer somewhat, I'm using a a 3.5mm stereo lead to feed audio out of the Now Box and into my TV

https://encrypted-tbn3.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcTmrlLA4FbrTyNFFZ-PilDS2N7TKNcUypuq5J0uL0vs8fbYU23A

which works fine. It's possible that if you use the genuine Now TV A/V cable (or equivalent) which has 4 poles on the connector

https://www.euronetwork.co.uk/media/catalog/product/cache/1/image/500x500/9df78eab33525d08d6e5fb8d27136e95/3/-/3-5mm4pole-3rca.jpg

that the A/V connector is disabled (as it's disabling the video output), but I don't have one to test it with.

If you're just using HDMI plus a regular 3 pole 3.5 mm jack it will work

And of course, the new black box does not have an A/V socket at all so you need an older white one.
