My bedroom is rather small and it gets rather hot in the evening this time of year especially with two people. I have had many of fans over the years, a fan connosieur you might say but no expert... anyway can anyone recommend a fairly decent relatively cheap fan? Are tower fans better? Do you like flakes with your ice cream?

My experience says that tower fans are less effective than 'normal' fans, but have advantages if you want to cool from floor upwards (e.g. when standing and ironing).
The others are all much of a muchness, I have a great 9 inch fan from Argos that cost £7-8 I think on my desk. I have / had others 12-14 inch for £10-15 and got a bargain £39 Honeywell one for £7 on a lightning deal once. I like them all, but wouldn't say that the £39 is any better than the cheaper ones (it does look nicer though).

In terms of noise, you could pick up 2 identical models and one would be quiet and another that is noisy. How well you assemble it has an affect and the surface you stand it on. This is a nature of the design which is common to them all.

My advice, don't spend too much; it's not worth it. Definitely don't even consider Dyson; I used a friends once, expecting amazing results after they raved about it. I can only assume this was the only fan they'd used as it no more effective than cheap ones, when on a high (aka useful) speed, it was quite noisy too. Their claims of whisper quiet operation are only true at low, pointless speeds.

That looks similar to the one I got from B&Q . I paid £20 in a sale. Would recommend this if you decide to go for a tower fan.

That will have to be second hand then as 99.99% are Chinese made now.

most fans are made in china. i used to buy mine from abroad where they tend to stock japanese made products. also i used to go to tottenham court road in london where there are electronic shops that stock japanese made electrical items and buy them from there.

When I was looking around for table fan there were many makes and Igenix caught my eye (for value for money). I bought it and it has been good. There are various sizes available to consider depending on your needs. I think they have 2 year guarantee as well which is usually not provided.
