If sound is important (either volume or quality ) budget for a soundbar as well .By their very nature , slim and light, modern TVs - even high end ones - have terrible sound . Pick up a cheapish soundbar (£50 -£80 ) and it will enhance any tele .

Built in DVD players never last long before they stop working.

The Toshiba 32D1333B keeps popping up as one which has decent enough speakers.

Agree with shauneco-make sure you get it from Argos and pay for the extra protection or get it at Costco who give a 5 year guarantee. I have a 40 inch Toshiba dvd combo. Without sounding patronising, an older person might struggle with the remote (obviously depends on how tech savvy your mum is). The sound is ok though.

Link for tv from Argos: http://www.argos.co.uk/m/static/Product/partNumber/9126992.htm

I would suggest getting it from John Lewis whatever you decide on for the free 5 year warranty, or possibly Richer Sounds as their warranty prices are very low.

Unfortunately John Lewis seem to have gotten wise to the dvd/tv combo issues-their warranty on these products is now 5 year on the tv part 2 year on the dvd part!
