Yes, just google take apart instructions. Crucial make good SSDs - We have had a lot of failures with the cheaper Sandisk SSDs at work. Also buy a USB 2.5" SATA external hard disk case if you want to clone or copy from the old hard disk. If you install Windows 7 make sure you enable TRIM support after you have got it up and running (find the command with google.) Good luck.

samsung evo's are the best rated ssd's, try also running ccleaner as that program works wonders on speeding old laptops up, and if your antivirus program is letting malware in run the free malwarebytes as thats also a favourite.

Get the cheapest (within reason) SSD you can if it's just to spruce up an old laptop.
You wont notice the difference between top of the line SSD and something more affordable - in real usage scenarios.

The slowest bit will be cloning the old drive to the SSD, if you're not doing a fresh install of your operating system.

link with useful information

its for replacing the memory, however to replacing the hard drive with a ssd, you will need to strip it down to get to the drive.

yes.

If they are light users personally I would just whack all their personal files (photos and that) on a usb stick/external hard drive and to google/dropbox/whereever then back up all their passwords in chrome (if that's the browser they use), then do a fresh installation onto the ssd rather than the fiddly business of cloning the harddrive.

you can do this either from the disk that came with the laptop, or if you don't have it you can download a win10 disk image from here:

https://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/software-download/windows10

put that on a usb stick and install it from there.

you should ahve a sticker with the license key on the bottom of the laptop. if this is worn away you'll have to note it down first.

might be best to install win 10 as it's faster than older versions.
