It will work on wifi. If it works in this country, it will work in any, so try it here before you leave. Not too sure if your phone will work without a sim, I'm sure the iphone doesn't.
Just try it. If it doesn't, get a free payg sim.

Just keep your mobile data switched off.
WhatsApp and Viber are great to keep in touch when abroad, providing you get decent wifi connection

WhatsApp is good, I have virtually no signal at home so WhatsApp is my main way of messaging people! can only message other WhatsApp uses though. Facebook messenger might be an option for friends who don't use WhatsApp. Just be sure you are using wifi and not mobile data!!

I think you will need your SIM in your phone for whatsapp to work even over WiFi as it uses your mobile number for the account and without a SIM your phone won't have a number, just turn off your data and leave your SIM in

Not sure how true that is - at least, if you change to a different sim and don't re-install whatsapp, it keeps your old number

that's my understanding but I am not 100% I just threw it into the mix hoping someone would either correct or confirm :)

Both Whatsapp and Viber (the better option) I believe can be set to use wifi only.

I'm on PAYG with Tesco and mainly use Viber (but have Whatsapp also installed) and it only sends/receives when in wifi.

whatsapp will work on wifi, but on a phone only and not on an iPad
viber is superior in many important ways but unfortunately, due to the network effect, whatsapp continues to dominate
if you are able to, I'd advise you to tell all the important people you need to maintain contact with to install viber on their phones too
an additional option is to also install Skype and to put a little bit of credit on there - you can then call UK numbers and local numbers (in the country you're in, e.g. for booking a restaurant) for cheap

You don't need your sim card in to use WhatsApp,as long as you have already installed it and started using it.
