Hi everyone,

I am moving to Canada next month with my girlfriend who is currently one year into a two year phone contract.

She has checked with 02 and it will cost £300+ to cancel, I believe her monthly payments are around £30.

Does she have any options other than to just ride the contract out or bite the bullet and pay the fee? Her phone is a Samsung s6 and she paid like £200 up front for the handset - I don't think the deal was particularly good a year ago!

Thanks for any advice!

it would be what ever o2 say it is. £300 when you still have 12 months @ £30 is not bad, considering you would essentially still owe money on the phone too. I think either you have to cough up the £300 or see the contract out.

I believe you can transfer the contract to another person. I'd also look into whether you should sell the phone too - Canada uses different frequencies from the UK, so unless the phone has all of them, it may not work well (or at all) there. Also when you move, don't contract with Bell Mobility over there, and expect mobile plans (especially data) to be significantly more expensive. Even home broadband... costs a bit more and most plans are capped. Used to live there a few years ago, I remember the (non-retention deal) rate for an unlimited home cable broadband connection was about £50/month.

isn't she on o2 refresh? you just pay for the phone

i remember being offered 3% discount for ending early
if this is what you are being offered, i'd suggest keeping it - as 3% is trivial - and installing an app called TuGo when you get to canada
this will allow you to make and receive calls through data (cellular or wifi) from your O2 number and will be charged the normal rate e.g. free to receive and calls to UK landlines and mobiles will be out of the allowance.
I'm sure in the first few months you will want to call the UK a lot!

Are you moving to Canada for good? If I were I'd just cancel the direct debit and forget about it! That may be really poor advice tho!

With some companies you can freeze the contract, if you are coming back and then start from where you left off.

You paid £200 upfront? X):(X):|oOX)

Never good to leave bad credit. Will come back to haunt you. Plus, not moral to steal and run.

My GF did, I did insist on finding her a deal but she couldn't wait!

Thanks for the response everyone!
