I have a Mercedes A160 for the last 5 years. Its been a great car and with regular servicing been 100% reliable so far. Now I am getting suspicious that something may be going wrong but maybe I am just nervous. The car seems to be revving a lot more on lower mileage than it used to do. Even at driving at 30 its revving up to 2 which it only used to do at higher speeds, is that normal or should I find a mechanic to look at it? Just feel its struggling so much more than it used too. Would rather prevent a breakdown with winter coming as the car is the only way of getting out of the house. Any sensible advice appreciated please.

Revving up to 2 at 30 doesn't sound overly excessive.
Is it a diesel or petrol?

You may just be noticing more about it after having it a while.
I've had my current car for 2 and a half years and started hearing an odd noise which I later found out was my AC. Also noticed when lifting the clutch slightly after going into first gear, the engine revs a bit too prepare for moving off.

In my opinion, it doesn't sound like anything is wrong, but maybe someone else has had a different experience.

Is the clutch slipping. That wil make it rev but not put power down properly

I would go to your MAF (mass airflow sensor) and give it a clean they always got messy on these engines, if you give it a clean you will notice it should get better. IIRC checking (never cleaning) the MAF is not part of the service schedule. Eventually it will start to stall out as it does not get the right mix of fuel and air, you probably notice your exhaust is a bit stronger smelling or more sooty.


We only had about 5 petrol's in our fleet in that era, both had MAF cleaned or replaced (warranty) about 70K and one had a ECU replaced.

Sounds like the start of the clutch slipping.

Is the car a manual or auto? Has it had a clutch replacement in its life?

Apart from general servicing it has only had the brake pads replaced last year. Filters etc are done with servicing. No other parts have needed replacing.

Forgot to say its struggling more going uphill now like it almost cant make it to the top and difficult to get up speed, much harder when it used to be such a smooth drive.

Egr is probably clogged up.

Also turbo could be clogged up resulting in a stuck wastegate?


Not all faults put engine warning light on, Although they are usually stored and can be read with dealer level diagnostics software.

So looks like I new to get a mechanic in then to find the problem, cant take anything apart myself; lucky to open the bonnet and If I mess with it sure to be 10 times worse afterwards.

Halfords are doing a diagnostics test for £30 so booked it in there to see if I can get definite answer. Thanks
