They had a £299 one in Asda today (instore). It's an Acer (good make), but im not sure on the exact spec.

I'm trying to find one for my cousin who's Laptop screen went pop on saturday. There seems to be a lot of £300 deals around at the moment, but was wondering if anyone knew of anything even cheaper. As the OP says, all they want it for is storing photos, music, tapping out school work and internet shennanigans!

The cheaper the better... Just as long as it comes with some form of warranty.

I did warn him about 2nd hand laptops from some family friend, but would he listen?!?

Cheers all!

Depending on how he uses it, if it is only the screen that has gone 'pop' could he connect it to an external monitor and continue to use the laptop he has?

I suggested that but he doesn't have a monitor and it's mainly his daughter that uses it for her homework... Apparently! From what I've seen, her homework consists 90% msn:whistling:

He's going to bring it round here next weekend so I can get all the stuff off the HD for her. I dread to see what I'll find on there!!!

Thanks for the input though... Much appreciated.

A monitor is going to be a lot cheaper than a new laptop though if they are worried about cost, and you won't have to get everything off the hard disk!

I totally agree but their minds are made up that it must be a laptop. To be honest the old/broken one is on it's last legs anyway and was a waste of money to kick off with, but he'll just have to put it down to experience now...

I've found one at dabs for £280 and I know that "a few quid more would get a lot better but there's a dangerous slope in there... Add £20, add £20, add £20... Before you know it you're shelling out £500 for features you'll never need!

I'm still looking though, and thanks once again for your helpful advice!!!

You are very much at the baseline end of the market - if you are going to get one for under £300 or so make sure it isn't crippled in memory capacity etc. Look for at least 1GB ram for Vista or 512MB for XP as an absolute minimum. The HP one at dabs looks good for the money but could certainly do with an extra 512mb of ram to keep it running smoothly.
