Are you talking the foam that is injected??? We had it done at home and the difference was negligible, try to find some prices for doing it yourself, even I would tackle it ( watch the bathroom, the bit under the bath sometimes fills up, great for keeping the bath warm, but not great for plumbing)!!!

We had cavity wall insulation about 6 weeks ago. I used http://www.energysavingtrust.org.uk/proxy/view/full/2019/grantsandofferssearch to find details of offers in my area (like you we couldn't get it for free). We found that it tends to be the same company that does all the work (i.e. Miller Pattison came round and the surveyor had a book giving the different discounts depending where the enquiry came from). It was most competitive to go through our gas supplier and it cost £199 for our 3 bed semi.
One thing to note - if you have a conservatory/sloping extensions, they will charge extra for an access platform - approx £90.
We have noticed the difference. Our thermostat is kept 1-2 degrees lower yet the house is still warm and retains the heat more. Our cold spot (the hallway) is not anywhere near as cold as before. We are pleased with our decision to go ahead with it. It's definately worth getting quotes.
