hi mshtel,

£250 for two nights for 4 persons. hmm my experience has been that they charge you by the person not the size of room. u might want to consider looking for an apartment.

APARTMENTS we looked at this site first:
http://www.chicstays.com/es/index.php

(http://www.spanishholidaycottages.com/barcelona-apartment-port-limpic.shtml) we got quoted €70 per night at this penthouse apartment overlooking the sea on one side and the city on the other. pity the owner had a birthday bash so that weekend was off-bounds.

we also checked out forums for reviews on places (http://www.madridman.com/cgi-bin/ubbcgi/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=2;t=002506)

my other half and i were in Barca for 6 nights. researched many hotels including the ramblas then decided it would be too noisy for a good sleep after loads of walking during the day so we ended up in the eixample district - this hostal (note the 'a' not 'e' in hotel) or guesthouse (family run) served our needs. a double room, high ceilings, a double bed plus a single bed with small covered balcony, small bath but hot water available (not b&b but as long as you can find yourself somewhere for your daily sundries, we found a cheap mart nearby). HOSTAL MARTINA is 10 mins walk from the gaudi buildings (casa batllo, casa mila, segrada familia etc), 10 mins to top of the ramblas. everything is pretty much walking distance so it was easy-going. AND quiet. we stayed at the 'bailen' branch, no chance to see if the other one was better (just up the road) ... email them at their weblink for a quote: (http://www.hostalmartina.com/martinaenglish.html)

remember that pictures might not represent the true accomodation fully so best to have a list of a few accomodation possibilities in case the one you reserved didn't pan out - when you arrive, do chk the place out and decide if you want to stay or not ... trust your instincts.

a note on travelcards.
from the airport there is a train to central (a few stops) so check where you're meant to get off. the good thing is you can purchase a T10 card (valid for 10 tickets zone 1) - you punch in and out, and get an hour 15 mins for free. so if you can manage to visit two places within that time it gives a lot of savings. many people do not know the T0 is also valid for the airport train trip. you can also share your friend's card if you run out, it just punches twice. can be used on buses too. hope this helps.

if you are not after a particular hotel, you'll get a spectacular discount if you go to priceline.co.uk and use the Name Your Price facility - last year I got 4* hotel for £20 a night!

Me, my girlfriend and two friends stayed in Hostal Fernanando off Las Ramblas if you were looking for something budget. We had a 4 person dorm between us - not good if you are looking for hanky panky though...:x
