Just done a search on Travelodge and Newhall St is clsest - about 2/3 of a mile from New St - 2 nights for £70 if you're quick http://www.travelodge.co.uk/search_and_book/rooms_rates.php?hotel_id=379&from=map

could try the Etap http://www.etaphotel.com/gb/hotel-5678-etap-hotel-etap-hotel-birmingham-centre/index.shtml

or nitenite if you don't mind - well TINY - but different
http://www.nitenite.com/

City Inn is a bit further and around £60 a night unless you can negotiate with them

Comfort Inn (where nightlife is , symphony Hall and Rep Theatre also - about 10mins walk to New St) is £50 per night per room
http://www.comfortinn.com/hotel-birmingham-united_kingdom-GB655

other cheapy hotels a bit further out with, shall we say, MIXED reviews are the Apollo http://www.apollobirmingham.com/splashmain.asp/pages/id.10350/ecombuilder.html and the Paragon http://www.theparagonhotel.co.uk/home.php

traveleodge/wetherspoons/comfort/ibis etc are best value for a family. If you just want a cheap no frills single bed, the Paragon is £25 a night.
