i would recomend a samsing but you wont get one for £25

Are you sure it only did Divx? Normally they support a whole load of codecs...
My advice, as always(!), is to softmod an XBOX and install XBMC... then you can play anything, network shares, almost all codecs and upscalled to 1080i... yummy! :)

yup we tried xvid files and it didnt play it unfortunately.

XBOX route is a little long as its a dvd player for someoen who is not tech-savvy. plus he doesnt want to spend more than about £50.

XBMC is simple enough for my parents then anyone can deal with it. £20-30 at any shop that stocks them!

Infact you can set it up to auto play video files on CD/DVD... Still my advice, take it or leave it. :)

how much would it cost for the whole xbox and xbmc ?

As you had a look in Tesco, their value DVD player (a compact thing) at £17. plays DivX.

Can be hacked to be multi-region from the handset, too.

It does, I play Xvid AVIs on one regularly.
