Hey im moving into a student house with 3 others in a couple of weeks and i want to sort out getting connected as soon as possible so im looking around for the best deal for a good speed broadband at a reasonable cost (<£20)

I've had a look at Be Broadband: https://www.bethere.co.uk/belitehomebroadband.do

but would they be the best in terms of value for money? And are they a decent isp?

Looking at http://www.broadbandguide.co.uk suggests that Be could be a good deal for you.

Unfortunately that information is out of date as Be Lite has been replaced by Be Value at £14.99 pm which does require a 12 month contract, losing one of Be's advantages. The Be Unlimited service (£24pm though) doesn't impose a formal length of contract which may be useful for students likely to move out/on within the 12 month period but you still need to give three months' notice to cancel.

I have been looking into ukonline's £9.99pm for my sister as she wanted a low-cost option as an improvement to dial-up, http://www.ukonline.net/home/broadband/ and it is available from her exchange.

http://www.broadbandchecker.co.uk/ may be worth a look but I think some of the better deals that were out there have fallen aside as various smaller companies (who are often competitively priced) get absorbed into the big players like O2, Orange, BT, etc. See also Money Supermarket

We're with VirginMedia via cable so we'd have to make big changes to switch anywhere else.

Be beat this - 8mb connection and unltd - check out Samknows to see which BB suppliers are available from your exchange.

On the Be offer use Sales1 to get a free month and go through Quidco to get another £15 or so back.

best to remember that all non virgin internet providers require a BT landline at £11 a month. If you don't want a landline (I don't have one in my student house) then this extra £11 should be added to the cost of the broadband. With virgin media you can get BB without a phone line which could make it cheaper.

If you are not in a cabled area or you do want a landline though then just forget this post :-D
