Hi I am looking to take my girlfriend away to Spain for the 1st time in june/July, but i have never actually been abroad so i dont want to get ripped off by travel agents as i dont really know which ones are cheap and which ones arent, can anybody tell me who seems to do the most reasonable deals on holidays?

If you have never been before you would be better off doing a package. Most agents have online deals that are cheaper than the stores but you might need the attention of a store if you are new to holidaying abroad. You could go in and pick their brains then find the deal online later!!

Starting point would be to go to travel agents and get glossy brochures to decide where you want to go and get idea of price range. Then use Google to search for hotel and resort - you might get some better prices that way.

Finally, it's probably worth checking Opodo or Expedia to see if you can put together same package there for less. But, you need to be aware that if you use Opodo/Expedia, you'll be on your own! So, for instance, you'd need to get transport from the airport to your hotel and arrive at the hotel at their normal booking-in times. You might save several hundred pounds but, unless you're confident about getting around abroad on your own, a simple package is probably best.

Teletext holidays anyone?

try jet2holidays.com they are very cheap indeed, we went to lanzarote for 110 each for a week all inclusive!!! absolute bargain i can tell you, and they are simple and friendly to fly with, make sure you tag on the transfers though!!!

i agree with the diy option, you are at the mercy of the hotel etc when you arrive and no one to answer to, there are loads of travel websites that do give you feedback on loads of places, and most of all dont be daunted!!! its easier than you think, its simple, just imagine the plane as a big bus that takes you where you want to go etc, no more hassle than getting the train to london and finding your hotel down there

i would definitely advise looking at tripadvisor for reviews of hotels. but do look at the dates of the reviews, people complaining of dirty hotels 4 years ago is unlikely to be relevant if the place has changed ownership/been renevated etc. Also don't expect 5 star reviews, people are far more likely to go to the bother of leaving a review if they have had a bad experience rather than a good one. so the results tend to be skewed to the negative.

otherwise follow the advice already given. if you're not bothered about where you go leave it late to get a cheaper price, but try and avoid deals which place you in a hotel on arrival, it's best to know where you're going to stay. and try playing high street agents off each other. a lot tend to offer price matching, so if one is cheaper than the other, go to the more expensive and see if they will reduce the price, do that a couple of times back and forth and you can save a bit (but don't take the mick). And remember most places will add 2% credit card charge which can add up to a lot.

Try www.venere.com for reviews and easy searches on hotel prices, I've used it every time we go on holiday and it's never let us down!

In the past we've booked a late holiday with Direct Holidays and got a good deal and you'll tend to get more choice if there are only two of you.

They (and I think Mytravel too) still offer 'named' accomodation on late bookings so you can see what is available and then go on a website like 'holidays uncovered' to see what sort of reviews the place has had.

Plus it depends on what type of holiday you want, do you want to see sights and enjoy a bit of the Spanish culture or do you just want a relaxing break with sun, sea and sand. We went to Benidorm about two years ago with Direct Holidays and stayed in the Terralta Apartments. We had a great time as they were up by the old town and we enjoyed a family holiday with days by the pool and nights walking round the old town. It was a lot different than the bar/clubs of the new town but if you wanted to go there it was a short bus ride/taxi away.

Also have had great holidays with them in Cala Llonga in Ibiza.

Happy Holidays where ever you go.

Teletext holidays anyone?

teletext holidays have been great for me in the past - however some of the really good deals on there sell out very quickly
