Cheapest kick ass PC possible?

Hi,

Due my parents PC running just about everything at decent speeds (quite a few games, any HD movie content etc) but completely failing at running anything with flash in it (YouTube, iPlayer, streaming sites etc) I'm going to buy them a new PC, or build one, not sure yet.

Ideally I'm after something that:

- Looks nice!

- Is quiet!

- Performs well at the most basic of stuff, I'm thinking C2D might be preferable but don't know for sure...

Any tips or advice would be great, looking at a Dell Inspiron or this Acer (http://www.ebuyer.com/product/143130#) - seems cheaper than a custom build, by the time you allow for Vista etc too

Cheers!

If you want something quiet and you really mean quiet then I doubt you can get it cheap.

Good quiet almost silent component are not cheap.

You need to get good CPU fans like ZALMAN, some decent graphics cards with good fans as well.

You can find some quiet PC stuff here

Won't play flash but plays HD??? Even a P3 will do flash fullscreen without effort:thinking:
banned#3
Why exactly is it struggling with Flash??
#4
Hah, I think the CPU is even worse than P3 (AMD Thunderbird lolz) but yeah, it runs 720p MKV/Quicktime stuff without any trouble at all, but stuff like YouTube, iPlayer runs really, really slowly. If you put it in full screen it gets about 2 frames a week

I've got a slot A Thunderbird system around here somewhere, 750mhz I think
#6
Hehe :D It's a bit more than that, but still not great... ^_^

Shame if I'm honest about the flash thing though, I have a C2D @ 3Ghz with 2GB RAM, and my parents PC runs most things just as quick as mine does, somehow!
#7
Sounds more like a software issue to me.
#8
Nah unfortunately, it's an AMD Thunderbird 1Ghz (lolz) that runs everything far better than it should, apart from Flash

Will you notice much benefit from a regular Core Duo to a Core 2 Duo in regular day to day stuff? My parents quite literally only use their computer for the Office suite, checking e-mails and browsing the internet.

Tempted by a Vostro 200 if I'm honest.

Cheers

if you looking for a top notch pc build your own is the way to go, you will get much better specs, graphics card for the price u pay for a system like ebuyer or dell, the trick is to buy the parts off ebuyer for example or aria or similer places like that and pick up a cheap o s system on ebay like vista or xp if you really look at some of the specs on that ebuyer one they are not that great,
#11
Thanks dude, I did build my own computer, but this is for my parents and I was a bit misleading with the title - I want it kick ass in that it looks nice and runs quietly, not a lot more than that :D

best thing to do is look at places like amazon, komplatt, dabs, ebuyer, aria and buy parts from them, look at the cheapest and best for ur needs, you be surprised how u can build your own with far better specs, you can get mem hard drive, graphics cards quite cheap off them from £23 , you can pick up a motherboard for the intel processor for 23 off aria as to regards with the mouse, keyboard dvd drive, pc case etc all cheap ranging from £4-£12 as for vista xp best to get that off ebay, altho, if u still have vista or xp on ur old machine just use that save u a bit

No, I went from an Athlon Thoroughbred to a Core 2 Quad and have noticed absolutely no difference.

If it'll play 720p video though it sounds like the flash problems are a software issue, have you tried simply reinstalling it?

That looks really nice, thanks n1tty!! I swear I replied properly yesterday but my post has disappeared? Bah! That's a very nice spec though and for a decent price, thank you.

Just saw this and it looks like a bargain, but refurbished so I'm really not sure about it - http://www.boffer.co.uk/

I mean, if I get into that, I may as well look at Dell Outlet etc too ;\

Thanks endless too - I guess I won't rule out AMD then! The PC is pretty much clean unfortunately, just has a really slow processor and Flash is very CPU intensive, apparantly

Got mine from these chaps, £400 granted but quad core with 4gb ram and 500gb hdd . . . and vista's included in the price, home premium.

Cheers man, if it was for myself I'd consider that as it looks great, but for my parents it really is overkill, they barely need 1GB RAM and 20GB hard drive, let alone all that :D Will try and get something that's a good compromise though - 160GB HDD and 2GB RAM should be spot on.

I do apologise again for the awful misleading title by the way. I just want something that looks nice, is quiet, will run the office suite and browse the internet for as little as possible :)
