Cheapest way to call/text the UK from Spain?

Hi all, does anyone have any info on contacting the UK from Spain, went last year and it was costing over £1 to send a text about 40p a min and we were having to pay for excepting calls to our o2 PAYG mobile. We ended up buying a public phone card, but that was a bit of a pain, so was wanting to know of any way of doing it easier/cheaper, there are a lot of free sims flying about, not sure if any of them are better for abroad.

i found the phone card the cheapest.

the cheapest ie free :) is to get some free sim cards from virgin . the ones with £5 credit. register them and it'll go to £7. get a few of them and you're away.

aside from that the cheapest is definitely the phone cards that you have to phone a freephone number and then enter the number you want to call. you can usually get them that will give you about an hour for 5euros

what about buying a local sim card or does that work out just as expensive?

Get on contract all my txts are free when I'm abroad :)

with most contracts you either still pay for texts or each text uses multiple units from your allocation. iirc my daughter's o2 contract is for every text abroad uses 4 of her text allowance

I top up my phone about once every 2 months, my 300 free texts last me the first month and the £10 credit last me the next, so I'm paying £5 a month, find me a contract with at least 300 free texts and some minutes for £5 a month and i'll kiss your feet! lol

seriously tho, I can't afford a contract, probably don't even want one tbh, I like knowing where I stand with the bills etc.

thanks for the info guys, guess i'll have to stick with the phone card again, seems like the cheapest option, altho I will look into buying a sim over there once I'm there.

Hiydi Hi.... Some of my family live in Spain (Benidorm) and what they and we use when over there is a phone card, BUT... a phone card that you purchase for around 10-15 euros and everytime you use it it takes one euro off you, for example if i was over there and to ring home no matter how long i was on the phone, it would only take one euro off me. Also i found a tricky thing too, if you dont hang up and press a number to make another call, still only charges you one euro. Mwah....x Gem

oh that sounds really good, only problem is, when we call home its for a few minutes here and there, just to check the house/cat is ok etc. the bf will chat to his family but again, not for that long in one go. Might get the daughter one tho, so she can ring her mates and chat rubbish!! lol Sounds like a nice trick

I frequently use O2 when going abroad for receiving and sometimes making calls.

You send a text message before going which will deduct £5 from your balance, any calls you make within Spain (including Spanish numbers and back home) get charged at a flat rate of 25p/min and the best part is, any calls you receive will cost you NOTHING.

So your relatives / friends or whoever can call you as much as they like and it's just as if you're still in the UK, you don't have to worry about being charged at all.

Hiya, thanks for the info, sounds interesting!!
Do you know any details about texts cost when you've paid the £5? I presume this is a bolt on? Do you have a name for it or the number you text? I did look at their bolt ons but the only one I could see relating to calls abroad was one to save calling there, not one for calling the uk from abroad.

Thanks for your help :)

We bought a pay as you go sim card for a spanish network whacked it into an old unlocked phone and pass it round to whoever is going to Spain.

Go to a phone box shop (thats what they are called in Ibiza) they have booths where you call places and then charge you for the call aftterwards, place I used to go charged about 19 euro cents per min for a UK land line call, think it was about 29 cents for a UK mobile last time I checked, also have a look around in the internet cafes, several of them will have phones aswell mate.

Why not leave your 'phone at home and send a picture postcard to let family and friends know that you wish that they were there?

Just an add-on for PAYG so no contract or anything.
