If you book too early you will pay normal prices, most companies release their Advance (cheap) tickets about 12 weeks before, so it would probably be best to wait a few more weeks. Can you decide how you want to travel? then find out where the departure point is, for example Virgin travel from Preston to Edinburgh, obviously I don't know if that is acceptable if you live Accrington / Blackburn area. A problem you may have is the 2nd Jan is a Sunday, it may be a bad day for travelling, ie restricted timetable or major hold ups due to maintainance of the line, is it possible to travel either a couple of days earlier or a couple of days later?
Virgin have released Advance tickets up to 2/12/2010.

In a few weeks time you will probably get them a lot cheaper, probably half the cost but it is a Sunday so Advance tickets may be in short supply. 3/1/2010 is a Bank Holiday in England, 3/1/2010 & 4/1/2011 is a Bank Holiday in Scotland.
The Virgin tickets from Preston for 2/1/2011 at present are £30.40p single whilst the same ticket for 21/11/2010 are from £8.50p single but these are the Advance tickets.

Might be worth looking at flights - seriously. The train fares seem to have gone crazy recently, I used to get Edinburgh-Birmingham return for just over £20, and now its £59 (at the lowest - and not a very good time - I've checked loads of different dates too). Flights were cheaper :/.
You can check destination from Edinburgh here - http://www.edinburghairport.com/portal/page/Edinburgh%5EGeneral%5EFlight+information%5EDestinations+and+airlines/ - so if you live near any of the places listed might be worth checking flights from there.

Or Blackburn - Preston - Edinburgh.
I went from Edinburgh - Blackpool via Preston, but accidently went to Blackburn (only took in the first few letters and ran for the train). I think the return was about £17, but again prices have gone up since then.
I think that was actually booked via crosscountry trains aswell

I think it depends what you want and if you are prepared to compromise to get a good price. I have just checked availability for Birmingham to Edinburgh and return and was offered these :-
Birmingham to Edinburgh
October 5 £3
October 6 £5
October 7 £5
October 11 £5
October 12 £5
All the above was travelling by Virgin leaving Birmingham at 06.17 arriving Edinburgh, (Waverley) at 10.23(Direct, No Changes)
Edinburgh to Birmingham
October 11 £7
October 12 £5
October 13 £5
October 14 £7
October 18 £3
All the above was travelling by Virgin leaving Edinburgh at 18.52 arriving Birmingham at 22.55 (Direct, No Changes)

We found recently that return tickets are costing more.
Try booking as 2 single journeys, i was very surprised.
Suppose it's up to the individuals to look, but i guess most folks just book return tickets.....so they making some extra there.
