Are these risk free ? ie they wont plant something inside my computer that could slow it down at a later date .

All free and I am absolutely certain there are no additional addons

They are highly recommended on most sites/pc mags - I've used them continuously for years without issues. I also repair/maintain/educate other pac's/laptops for friends and colleagues globally via Teamviewer using the above plus additional updaters etc all except hardware (because I can't fix hardware when not onsite)

Another vote for CCleaner here!

yes any help as i'm clueless when it comes to cleaning software, as there are lots to choose from
and preferably a free one, with lots of benefits

to start with download CCleaner "free" version from the link and install
close browsers
run "analyse" and then "clean"
click "registry"
run "analyse" and then "fix" select fix all issues (save backup if you want but in 6+ years I've never had to go to a backup)
click "tools"
uninstall any known software you do not need - if you don't know then either leave it or search their names
on same window click "startup"
look down the list and uncheck any unnecessary startup apps (example yahoo messenger automatically adds itself to windows startup yet it only takes a second to click the ym desktop shortcut so uncheck yahoo messenger)
then same window click "system restore"
remove all except 3 or 4 newest restore points

That's it your done with CCleaner - reboot if you want

You will not see much difference in speed until you've done full maintenance (cleaning/updating/defragging)

Updaters - free (other than Windows Update) - all the undermentioned miss different updates so that's why I list all

CNet's Download App (adds itself to Windows Startup so uncheck after install - slow scanning but works - uncheck paid/ignore for software unless you want to update/pay for the latest version)

FileHippo's Updater - (adds itself to Windows Startup so uncheck after install - quick )

Sumo - I'm sure it's free now as the last few updates have installed

IOBits DriveBooster - driver updater (adds itself to Windows Startup so uncheck after install

There are other options/software including multi-tool software but I prefer not to have bloated software

That's not all you need to make your laptop more responsive

Wise Disk Cleaner will find even more junk that CCleaner will miss + it has a slimming tool which will remove obsolete windows updates and Wise Reg Cleaner has a system tuneup

Then when you've got rid of your clutter and only if it's a hard drive you need to defrag the harddrive - defragging puts files together and reduces write/rewrite wear and tear on your harddrive and therefore improves boot time slightly. The benefit of system disk monthly on MyDefrag is it puts system files in the best location of your harddrive to again improve speed of booting
