since i have never owned one i thought it would be wise to ask around before i buy one!

i would like a nice slim compact digital camera that would fit in my pocket but in a vein way i would like it too look good and stylish! haha

i dont really understand much about them and pixels and that but i would like to be able to record videos on it also if thats possible.

not really looking to spend much over £120 as well, could anyone suggest any, inform me a little about these or just tell me what to get!

Hi Samiam182, you shouldn't have too much a problem finding a camera to suit your needs for that budget. There are a few other bits of information that might be useful though.

Do you want to have a camera with it's own custom battery, these are generally smaller and the battery life is generally pretty good. The alternative is a camera that uses AA batteries, with these you'd really want to get some good NiMH rechargeable batteries (and a charger). These cameras tend to be a bit more bulky, but you have the advantage that if you are ever out and about when the batteries go flat, you can buy some Alkaline AA batteries and carry on. Some people have very strong opinions about which to go for. I like to have the convenience of AA batteries - just in case!

Whatever you do, get a decent brand camera and don't be sucked in to the idea that the higher the number of megapixels the better the quality, this is simply not true, a decent brand camera with a decent lens is what you need, I'm sure that some other people will offer their recommendations. I will if I get the chance to surf at work!

I'd be very surprised if any cameras didn't allow you to shoot video, but do you want to be able to shoot long videos, or just short snippets of less than a minute - some limit the video length.

What kind of photos do you think you'll be taking. If it's mainly going to be outdoors, or in good light, then most of the good makes will offer good results, if you'll be taking a lot indoors and in blow light, then some are better than others (Fuji F series are particularly well thought of, I think there's one at Play.com for about £100 at the moment!)

Do you want a zoom lens, ignore digital zoom, you'll generally be looking at a 3-4x optical zoom for this price, especially as you want a small camera.

Like I say, I'll try to have a look for some ideas, if the boss isn't looking!

thanks alot for that reply! with the battery i would prefer i think with a custom battery since i normally will have a chance to charge it.

As for videos ideally i would like to be able to take not really long videos but for example if i go and watched a band etc i would like to record bits of the show so i would prefer it not to be limited,

My main reason of purchase is i am going to live in florida for a year and i want to take as many pictures of my time there as possible so really it will be a mix of indoor and outdoor pictures, but also i would like pictures for my days out here and nights out as well. As for zoom im not really sure, it would be nice to have a good zoom but i have not used a digital camera before really so i dont no how good these are etc the only camea i have used is my phone.

Agreed, Steve's Digicams has some good reviews. Ican't personally comment on a lot of the cameras, as I've not used them, so I don't know about the Casio. My past 2 cameras have been Canons which I've been very happy with, the image quality tends to be up there with the best. If you can find one in your price range (I think it's a bit over at the moment ~£140) then the Canon Ixus 75 is supposed to be excellent.

Looks like there are some bargains to be had from Amazon if you're quick. They have a glitch to get a free case and money back. Have a look on the Deals page to find out more.

I too vote you buy the ixus 70. Excellent camera. Could be a little more robust though. I've bashed it a few times and the case is dented. Works fine, I just thought the metal could be a little stronger.

I know I mentioned the ixus75 earlier, but the ixus70 at Amazon with the free case and extra discount looks too good to miss.

They really are good quality cameras, and the Canon lenses are certainly up there with the best of them.

I'd snap it up before they realise the mistake if I was you, then get a decent sized memory card and it'll still be well under your budget.

I just hope you like the look of it!

There's also the Panasonic FX12 in the deals thread, which is a pretty good camera.

Personally, although I have a Panasonic compact camera, I'd go with the Canon above. For memory cards, play.com have some good cheap cards (£5.99 for a basic gb card).

I have a casio exilim camera and had it for about 4 years now. When I bought it it wasn't the best camera about but im not the best photographer so didnt matter that much to me. What was good was that I could just slip it in my pocket as it was smaller than anything else at the time.

Well 4 years on still works as new, battery still holds its charge ok.

So if you want a small camera to slip in your pocket and take anywhere the Casio Exilm range is a good buy.

the cannon above looks nice and sounds look a great deal, i think i will go for that! is it small? its hard to tell from the pictures the size of it and im no good with measurements.

thanks everyone for the help

This is the same camera, it's just that in America it's call the SD1000 instead. I know that they could have bigger packs of chewing gum and matches, but really, this is very small. If you're really not too sure, then pop along to a shop and have a nosey.

that looks good to me, just wanted to make sure it would fit in my pocket! i will be purchasing one of these tonight :) thanks guys

after looking around abit more i have decided to go for one of these 2

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Canon-IXUS-70-Digital-Camera/dp/B000NUWJOM/ref=sr_1_15?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1202393508&sr=1-15

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Casio-EX-Z1050-Digital-Camera-Optical/dp/B000MVWEHY/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1202393209&sr=1-6

I prefer the look of the Casio but could somebody who knows more than me reccomend which one and why?
#16
Personally, I'd stick with the Canon, if only because I've had very good experience of their cameras, and know that their optics are really good quality.

If you want some other opinions, then have a google search for reviews (Remember the Ixus70 is also known as the Powershot sd1000) There are quite a few good camera review sites around. Sorry, no time to list any now, got to go!

the one thing is a image stabaliser, how useful is that? i hate it on my phone when pictures blur when its moved a little bit, is that a problem without that?

the Lumixx FX30 is looking quite nice also i think its between that and the Canon now for me

just went to buy the canon but it seems that deal is no longer working, and i dont seem to get a free case? :(
