Company threatening to take money from debit card

Hi all
I bought and returned something from an online company, I returned it as it wasn't suitable on 2nd July by second class post (their own pre paid label). They are saying they haven't received it, and not only that but apparently I abused a voucher code which gave me, wait for it.....£1.23 off. Now they are threatening 'if they find I have abused the voucher system fraudulently we will have to charge your account'. Hmmmmm. I haven't got a card attached to my account

Surely if you don't want people using vouchers you should void them in your own system?
Also wouldn't taking money unauthorised from my account be a lot more fraudulent than someone using a code that they accepted!
I think they do have my item back and are pushing their luck trying to scare me into not wanting a refund in case they somehow take money from me.

So can they take money?

Natwests chargeback team closes at 6pm which is really handy for those of us that work standard hours, so I have to call again tomorrow.

Thanks

Just 'loose' your debit card so they can't take any money and get a new one re-issued.

Did you get proof of postage when sending the item back or did you post it using a postbox?

Also, considering the hoo-haw surrounding the government's proposals for taking money straight from bank accounts if somebody owes them money, I don't think that a company would just be able to take momey from somebody's account without authorisation. I think they would be in a bit of trouble if they tried and you have the correspondence to prove that was what they intended.

I got proof of postage, they know this but are still trying to tell me that it's taken 2 weeks for a small packet to arrive.

If you have proof of postage then they need to take it up with the post office. As it is a pre paid label then they are the Post Office's customers as I assume they will have an account with them.

You can return goods up to 14 days after the day you receive the goods for a refund.

sounds like you are using an unreputable company and so it's your own fault.

Actually they are quite a popular website but of course HUKD logic must show that this is my fault. I love being messed around by people and then coming here to find your helpful comments. Thank you ever so much.

Why would I want them to know what I'm talking about, I'm sure some idiot on here would link them in to my post so they could have a good read.

Maybe if you had asked politely, instead of an attempt at some kind of humour(?) I would have PM'd you the company name, but not now.

You say that you have no card attached to your account, so where are they taking the from? Also you should always get a proof of posting from post office for this this exact reason. Hope you get it sorted out.

This is what I'm thinking, how on earth would they be in possession of my card details. Thank you. The whole thing is bizarre I just don't get why they have to make it so hard!

Humour ? :D From what I'm gathering your really worried about a company who dont have your card.."I haven't got a card attached to my account" threatening to charge you £1.23 from a voucher attached somehow to a purchase that was used ?

Thats humour for you right there :D:D:D

I'd be more worried about getting a refund ?

if they dont have your card details, how did you pay and how are they going to refund you?

I'd be more concerned about getting a refund than the £1.23 (which is irrelevant anyway as they will only refund your actual payment amount).

I always pay extra for recorded when sending pricier items back to stores. It's £1.10 but saves any hassle.

I just want to know who it is tbh so I can avoid them or atleast have to knowledge of this before ordering with them.

well, you're not being a helpful member by warning people against using them. if you haven't realised, you have an alias on here so you're anonymous. i doubt they would link back to this conversation and assume they would know who was talking about them. and, if you are not at fault, why would you care?

i can only assume you are therefore using an unreputable company if you're so afraid/embarrased of naming them publicly.
