Hi

Are console games dumbed down compared to their PC versions? If not, how does a relatively underpowered console play a game like Battlefield 1 which recommends a £400 GPU?

Cheers!

Yes, is the very short answer.

A £400 GPU runs games at over 4 times the resolution, twice the framerate, with a whole plethora of special effects added. The difference is night and day.

The core game is identical however. The shape of the levels is identical in, say, Battlefield 1, as even 'underpowered' consoles are still fantastic pieces of hardware.

BF1:4K +4K IPS MONITOR = OHHH MY LANTA, but also easily £1500 over kill... so I'm dumb but I'm so **** happy :D

You don't need a powerful card to play these games. Most people don't tweak their settings and just whack ultra settings and get upset at low framerates. A lot of dimished returns in PC graphics settings.

couldn't agree more there is currently an MSI laptop around 600 which can do BF1 on medium/high at 40fps think it's a 9 series mobile GPU by nvidia with like 2gb ddr4?

'Recommended' doesn't mean the hardware you need to enjoy the game but the hardware to see the game at it's prettiest. BF1 recommends an RX 480 4GB which is a £200 GPU, not a £400 one. https://www.battlefield.com/en-gb/games/battlefield-1/tech

The console versions don't achieve graphical parity, they are simply less pretty. Although they often do better than a similarly powerful PC because the game can be tuned to the exact balance of resources and hardware behaviour.

The gameplay is almost identical although there are generally a few tweaks like adding auto-aim so less precise thumbsticks can hit small targets.

All three platforms are somewhat power hungry at the moment unfortunately.

Dumbed down is probably the wrong way to put it, I'd say they are optimised more for consoles

Consoles have one set of hardware which has to last 5+ years until the next one is out so the games get optimized a lot better (hardware rarely changes for a console).
Not sure about the current gen but the PS4/Xbox 360 had a good number of games which ran at 720 or lower then got upscaled to 1080, they also run at much lower frame rate caps and use a lot of tricks/cheats to hide the limitations within games.

Optimised is probably the wrong way to put it, id they they are stripped down for console

Most people with a so called gaming pc won't have better graphics than a xb1 or a ps4, as their machines aren't tweaked to get the best out of them or the os is so old that it runs so slow, they would be better off with a xb1 as all they do is whine about graphic issues, crashing, and array of other problems without the knowledge or set up to get the best out of it.
