http://www.afterdawn.com/guides/archive/avi_to_dvd_avi2dvd.cfm . I use Magic dvd ripper to convert all my dvds. Only thing its not free. But its not as complicated as that one on the link i put on

i use nero to convert avi to dvd. it can be picked up for free from the right places. just search for warez forums.

I vote for Convertxtodvd. Tried everything else and this was by far the most straightforward. Quote from above post "it can be picked up for free from the right places. just search for warez forums".

so many around but by far the easiest i have used is dvdsanta. you simply select the source file and then the only options you need are ntsc/pal, quality high/med/low and widescreen/normal it will even burn the dvd for you in case you don't have nero etc. availability as above

I use a combination of TRANSCODE, FFMPEG and MPLEX to convert AVI files to MPG files suitable for burning to DVD under Linux. A few simple shell scripts will make the painful process less so.

Once the conversion is done, I use DVDAUTHOR to layout the disc contents before using K3B to burn the DVD.

All open source software, all very easy to do if a little time consuming.

Speed normally depends on how good your computer is and at what quality you are encoding it.
I like to encode my discs at the best quality so some can take up to 6 hours to encode! lol

Nero Vision 4 (part of the nero package) does really easily also, just select file and burn it does everything else for you

Winavi is the best and quickest I have used. Couple of clicks and its done.
