Hi i am thinking of buying a laptop from dell but was after a bit of advice.
Should i go for the dual core processor or the core 2 duo?
memory wise shall i get 1024mb 1536mb or 2048mb? bearing in mind i want this as cheap as possible but obviously i dont want it to be slow by any means so dont mind spending a bit extra if its really gonna benefit.
Next question is Hard Drive capacity what would you recommend??

as you can prob tell im not too good with all the tehnical jargon lol

Also does anyone know of any Dell discount codes around at the min?

Thanks in advance!

Stacey

These days you get them as standard. My Dell Inspiron 1520 has 4.

I got mine online through their website.

When you look at the Dell site, when you click on the link to say the Inspiron laptops, it should come up with a page that says something like "Choose Your Inspiron Category". When you click the type of Inspiron you want, on the next page should be 4 or more laptops to choose from called "featured computers". There should be a tab above them that says "Tech Specs". If you click on that, it will tell you how many ports it has. (The same will be true of all models, not just the Inspirons)

ETA: To answer your processor question. The 'core 2 duo' processor is better than the 'core duo', so get that one if you can. :)

Definitely get a Core2Duo or AMD 64x2 processor, 1.6ghz or higher.
160gb hdd
2gb ram

Also good to check for,
Ethernet
WiFi
Bluetooth

USB ports are usually standard, try to get a laptop with at least 2 on though.

Defo get a core 2 duo and the best wifi available, i have a dual core from Dell and the stock wifi, and to be honest its a bit slow loading pages and at multitasking. If you wanna download tv shows etc, you'll want a really good wifi. Hope this helps!

and to remind everyone again - 5% dicount if you buy through Quidco - also reduce warranty - search for MikeT threads for good build deals at dell. specs above are good - maybe too good for what you want - if you don't already know the jargon, suggest you want a cheaper build - should be able to get decent spec laptop for <£350 (I've not looked myself recently)

The woman at dell sales told you USB ports were £5 extra? Wow, that's terrible. I'd definitely consider buying from someone else if dell tells lies like that.

Multiple USB ports are standard on pretty much every laptop.

The Core 2 Duo is a dual-core processor (that's the duo bit of the name). so by 'dual-core' I guess you mean the pentium 4 dual-core.

Without knowing what you're going to use the laptop for then it's impossible for anyone to recommend which one is better for you.

If you want to run Windows Vista Premium though I'd definitely go for a good processor and 2GB of ram.

Hard drive size has no significant effect on performance so hard drive size only depends on how much you need to keep on it. Words don't take up much space but pictures, audio do. Movies take up lots and lots of space if they're on the hard drive. Although DVD movies played from the drive don't need any.

I assume the default wifi on dell laptops right now is the g varient. At 54mbps top speed this should easily handle the normal 2-8mbps internet connection. Perhaps you have the old 11mbps b varient Familia?
