simply put when you look through the viewfinder in a dslr then you'll see what will be recorded by the sensor rather than in a compact where is the viewfinder is displaced from the actual lens. dslr typically have the ability to switch lenses and are more high end and thus expensive then the equivalent compact

the sensors on DSLR twmd to be bigger too, meaning that the camera can gather more light and image quality per pixel than and compact resulting in better pictures

I think OP is talking about 4/3 cameras which have DSLR lenses and sensors but don't have a mirror to show in the viewfinder what is coming through the lens. if they have a viewfinder it will be electronic and is a screen showing the image on the sensor

DSLR you are seeing the image through a mirror and prism- and in many cases this means that you dont actually see the whole image.

mirrorless - you are looking at the image on an lcd.

So what you see in the viewfinder varies - so a lot depends on how good the viewfinder lcd is for a mirrorless camera.

mirrorless can be smaller - the mirror mechanism is quite bulky.

I suggest the op just Googles the question, seeing as everyone has said something different.
