Hi all,

Im going to new zealand later this year and want a decent digital camera (at least 4mp), but obviously, as I am going travelling I want to spend as little as possible.

I see there was a kodak 4mp camera for £23.99 the other day but I missed out on that - anything else that can compete with that offer?

Been trying to get a visa to go over permanently for a while but we cant get one. So we are going to go over on temp visas and travel around a bit, have a long holiday and then try and get a job to get sponsored to stay out there.

Really excited about it and cant wait, just bought 2 or the 20gb MP3 players to keep us occupied over there :D

Thanks, looking for a sub £50 camera though, doesnt need to be anywhere near 10mp, 4mp will suffice - mainly for sending back home occasionaly for printing.

The general public are convinced that the ultimate point about the camera is it's megapixel, followed by it's zoom.

If you want it simply, I would think of it the other way around though.

Lets say you had a 10MP camera with only 1x Optical zoom (ie. No zoom), then you can take 10MP pictures without zooming. If that image suffices, then lets say you had double the zoom (2x) and only 5MP, then the image quality of the target would be the same (assuming the target can fit onto a single image when zoomed in!).

Sooo... If you can get a 6x zoom camera, and only 3 or 4 megapixel, I'd take that personally. How ever, for £50 I can only see a 3x optical zoom camera, but my post was just a pointer regarding the 10MP - it's not really necessary unless you take detailed landscape pictures etc!

Very true.

I have a number of cameras of different resolutions but find my old Pentax Optio 30 (With 3.1mp!) still gives the 'best' pictures overall.

Granted, they are not the highest resolution but it produces pictures that look better than some 5mp cameras. It works well in low light, gives sharp pictures and gives excellent colour rendition.

As Matt C says, go for something with decent optical zoom (ignore digital zoom).

I'd also add that it's worth getting something with a decent, glass lens. A lot of the cheaper cameras have plastic lenses.

Lastly, and probably most importantly, get something that is easy and responsive to use. Too many cameras are either sluggish or have over complicated menu systems. You want something to "point and shoot" rather than wade through endless menus before you can take a pic.
