Hi Guys,

What is the best digital camera for around £180. It doesnt have to be small (its for my aunty) but cant be one of those hybrid SLR type cameras. I'm looking for a point and shoot with 4x optical if possible. Also preferably with a good Quidco cashback! :-D

Will also need a case and a 1gb memory card.

Preferably a brand like Canon or Fuji.

Thanks!

Is the case and memory card included in your £180 budget?
#2
Nope. I reckon overall budget around £200. That is not set in stone either, its just a guideline, but I have been instructed not to go crazy. It will mostly just be used for the odd holiday snaps etc.

Personally I'd go for something like the Panasonic Lumix FZ7 although that may be too big for your tastes, cracking camera though and there are some good deals around at the moment as they're bringing out its replacement which is only a marginal upgrade from the reviews I've seen, the super zoom and image stabilisation make it extremely versatile.

I still have its predecessor the FZ5

this is a 6x optical zoom.

SD cards are as low as £6 for a 1gb model...there was a decent shock proof case on her a few weeks ago for about £7 I think...so those two items can be purchased quite cheaply.

Thanks currychops. I think this maybe a little to complicated for her, but I will run it by her and see what she says.

Thanks again

To be honest you'll find most modern digicams are pretty straightforward to use, you can make them more complicated if you want but generally they'll have relatively simple modes for "point and click" if thats what you want

Personally I'd go for a Canon. The A630 fits nicely within your budget. 8MP, 4x Optical, 2.5" (articulated) LCD screen. Cheapest I've seen is £162.76. If you search Hotukdeals you'll see there is a 5% off code bring the price down to £154.62 including delivery. Also, when you add the camera to your basket you'll see that you get a free memory card wallet thrown in (not great, but a nice bonus).

It's usually the case with Canon cameras.

Is good for reviews although just be wary as some of the US models have different names

Another review here: http://www.steves-digicams.com/2006_reviews/a630.html

sample photos taken with the camera on the last page of the review.

Thanks all. I think the Canon A630 is the way to go. It was actually the original one I suggested to her, but thought I'd see what other people thought. Now, to find the best price! :D

I actually meant that the Pana camera might be too complicated here, not the canon - oops.

Actually let me throw this into the mix as well even though its slightly outside your price range.

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Canon-IXUS-Digital-Camera-Optical/dp/B000EW7570/ref=sr_1_3/026-9790590-0103633?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1175002384&sr=1-3

They don't come much easier to use than the Canon Ixus range, but it is more of a point and click than the powershot
#18
Thanks all. I'll put the ixus and the 630 by her and see which one she thinks looks prettier! ;o)

I bought my missus the ixus last christmas and she loves it. It's takes fantasic photos too. I just know that as size isnt an issue with my aunty, that the fold out screen is a good feature to have for self protraits.

Thanks again for all your help! :o)

Check out http://www.warehouseexpress.com/ for the Canon A630 - it is more expensive than other sites BUT they offer a "price match" scheme:

The Warehouse Express Price Beat Guarantee

If you find any of our products advertised, in stock and immediately available at any other UK based on-line or high street retailer, we will guarantee to lower our price to beat it. In fact we will reduce our price by 125% of the difference!

I recently used this to get a Canon A630 including next day delivery for slightly less than £150. Would also highly recommend WarehouseExpress, had great service from them on many occasions.

Who did you use to price match against to get it at that price?

I quoted them the Amazon.co.uk price which is currently showing as £159. They claim to match against any UK-based online retailer though so you could find a cheaper price to quote them.

Which camera were you saying this was for as the internal size of the case is smaller than the size of the camera. (Canon a630)

I was just referring you to the post Traveller...at that time I don't think you'd decided which camera to purchase ...the advantage of these cases, as you will appreciate, is that they can take a knock...have you looked on the website to see if there's one suitable for the A630??...maybe worth emailing their customer services for advice on a suitable case?

Sorry to be of such limited help.

109.4 x 66.0 x 49.1mm...yes I see it's not exactly slim.

it's not the slimest camera on the market, but it gives you something to hold on to ....

Fits like a glove into the sony case deal from argos posted last week.

Thanks all, I got her the Canon A630, Canon DCC-300 case and a Kingston 1Gb memory card. All sorted! :D
