Anyone taken this out?

Our years warranty on our Panasonic 42" plasma is up today and got quote to extend for up to 5 years.

Are Coverplan any good and should I bother? We paid just over £1k a year ago for this so it was a lot of £ and would  if it broke.:giggle:

Any advice?

I bought a 42" plasma from Currys in May05 for £899 (half price deal at the time) and got this cover, was £5-99 a month, Ive never had any issues with it so far, but I have now changed my home insurance to have accidental damage so if anything did go wrong with it, my home insurance would cover it, so i cancelled the currys cover last week..

obv, the main difference between home insurance and currys whatever happens is cost.

With Currys, you pay the flat rate, have no excess to pay, no call out charges, no parts or labour and will cover pretty much everyhting from the dog eating the remote to speakers blowing up or the panel failing. There are also no limits to the number of times you can claim (so if you pay £5.99/month and claim twice in a year, you still only pay £5.99, try doing that with your home insurance...)

That said you do have some protection under sale of goods, because it would be hard to argue that a 1k tv should only last a couple of years, but it boils down to peace of mind - £6/month (if thats what the cover is) is only £1.50/week which is about what I spend on milk for my coffee (or 1/2 pint of beer) so are you really going to miss that?

You could also look around at other providers that will provide similar coverplans but at reduced prices.

Have checked Home Insurance, we have accidental damage but that doesn't cover if the TV develops a fault of some sort.

Peace of mind it is, yep thats what I want. I will work out what the best option is to go for.

Anyone recommend any other companies to try for quotes?:)

Might be worth doing a seach on the net for someone else providing a similar product but not ties to a store. These are increadibly profitable for the companies and in general not good value for money.

thanks:) Anyone have any recommended companies to try? its a minefield when I google:giggle:

Home Insurance accidental cover might not cover your TV if it develops a fault but it will cover it if it somehow falls off the bracket / stand.:whistling:

more likely a wiimote will go into it in our house, keep having to tell my husband and my friends daughter to move back, they get closer and closer to the tv:giggle:

That sounds just like our house, my wife turns into a nutter when shes boxing and she even kicks her feet-what is that all about? I also have to keep telling her to move back.

To be honest I think punching it with a wiimote sounds less suspicious than it falling over.

In Oct 2005, got a non-hd 32inch lcd from pcworld. Cost me £600 or something like that. Paid the £6 a month for the coverplan.

In Aug this year, i dropped the tv when moving it. Screen smashed. Handed it into Currys. About a week later, I had a voucher for £500. Way more than that tv was now worth. Couple of weeks ago, used the voucher plus a wee bit of cash to get me a 40inch HD samsung from PCworld, cos they still allowed a pricematch although I was paying with voucher.

I'd vouch for the policy.

Coverplan is slightly different to the £5.99 a month policies. The pay as you go policies are called 'Whatever Happens' which gives you protection against faults and accidental damage etc for as long as you pay the monthly cost. They say WH runs from the number 1221 (1 number, 1 call, 2 working day call out, 21 day exchange if it can't be fixed). Coverplan however (which is what you have been offered as this is after the 1 year manufacturer warranty, covers you for the same faults and accidental damage but the service is not always as good. I have heard stories of customers ringing different phone lines etc trying to find the right person to deal with (Generally it would be Mastercare or TheTechGuys as they are now called). Also callouts can vary up to a timespan of 1week or 1.5weeks. And also Currys have up to 6 weeks to replace the TV if the fault cannot be fixed.

Hope that helps

They have also offered a PAYG policy too think it was around £7 a month. I will check all the T&C's when the paperwork comes.

Thanks for making me aware of that.
