Personally I found a few issues using a USB powered one. Might be better if you have one that uses a y-cable so it can use 2 ports to power (if your tv has more than 1 usb port)

What problems did you encounter ?

I am looking just to record tv - can anyone suggest a HDD to use with the LG 42' ?

Playback wouldn't work correctly, it basically seemed like it a momentary blip in power. I'm not sure if it was happening during recording or if it was during playback. I tried a number of drives all of which had the issue

Did the Y cable sort the problem ?
