Does your mobile plan allow tethering?

Hi Zak,

No such apps will work as this is dependant on the device and most importantly which version of Android you are using.

Lollipop and marshmallow have been coded to not allow tethering unless you have rooted your handset, in many cases you can still use the ADB command to change the setting on your device without rooting. I personally use a smartphone (EE Rook - £20 sometime ago) with 4G capabilities and used the ADB command successfully, to ensure I have Internet if my main provider dies.

You can't tether on your call plan but yes you can use FoxFi with PdaNet+

Should have mentioned I'm not rooted. There's no OTA updates on my Hauwei P9 which I'm assuming is on the latest Android.

So my only option is to root my phone?

You don't need to be rooted, also you can't tether on your call plan
Essential Plans aren’t completely devoid of premium features then and ensure you can make the most of your data allowance.

What you don’t get is personal hotspot support (also known as tethering) and access to Feel At Home – so you get charged Three’s standard roaming rates when abroad.

Essential Plans also don’t include free calls to Three customer services, instead they’ll come out of your allowance of minutes or be charged at your standard out of allowance rate if you’ve used them up.

I'm v late to the party but there is no issue tethering on a 3 Essentials plan via wifi, bluetooth or cable when using FoxFi. There appears to be confusion as to what is (not) allowed by t&c compared to what is acheivable via Foxfi. If there is an issue with tethering via Foxfi on a particular handset it will effectively be an app / Android compatibility issue, not a carrier restriction - the Essentials SIM will tether via FoxFi without issue in a known-compatible handset.

Tethering included only with Advanced Plans.

"Tethering included only with Advanced Plans" via nothing more than a written statement in terms and conditions, but completely functional in reality for all 3 plans when using Foxfi, inc PAYG plans.

You may be confusing a handset model compatibility issue with a general does not work issue. Put the Essentials SIM in a compatible handset and Foxfi will tether without issue. I have buddies who tether daily via Foxfi on Essential plans.

I haven't seen the OPs text message, but it is likely 3 saying they have detected tethering attempts which is not permitted under terms and conditions of the Essential plan. Detected tethering can attributed to using a 3-branded handset (IEMI detection) and / or Foxfi incompatibility with the handset/Android version. Without intending to sound like a stuck record: if a 3 SIM having any data capability it placed inside a compatible handset, tethering via Foxfi will be completely functional without restriction, regardless of what restriction is stated in t&c.
