My opening caveat is that what I know about domains, hosting and blogging could be written on the back of a postage stamp. But, because I have a website, not a blog, a friend is asking for help and I'm stuck.

We have signed him up to 1and1 and paid 99p for the first year and 10.99 for the second year for a domain name. Let's call it newdomain.com

He's opened up a free wordpress account and used their domain mapping upgrade for £11 to forward his blog address to the newdomain.com address.

What do we need to do with the 1and1 account to show the page as currently it's just a white page of nothing. The blog has some pages/blog entries on but these aren't showing - I'm guessing because we've mapped the domain. Clearly we need to be doing something with the 1and1 side of things to show the blog.

Anyone any ideas please?

Try doing a whois lookup

whois.domaintools.com/yourdomain.com
(Change domain at the end to whatever)

This will show what the nameservers are set to. If it's 1&1, the changes haven't applied yet, if WordPress then it's OK, could just need a bit more time to propagate.

Instructions are here. There's even a link to 1&1 to show where to change the settings too

https://en.support.wordpress.com/map-existing-domain/

Be cautious about doing this, you will also need to update email settings too if they're required

Thanks, we did that but still getting the blank page.

It can take up to 48 hours for the changes to occur. It depends what the TTL is set to on the domain (time to live) before all the DNS servers throughout the world update

Thank you again. We've waited almost that so guess we'll have to be patient. My only concern is that on the 1and1 dashbord next to the domain name it says:

Webspace : /.

Destination: Webspace
Target: /.

I cannot see anywhere on the help pages where it should give an indication of what the Domain Destination should show.

Thanks, I called WP and they had an issue which they sorted out and the site is now live. I'm very grateful for your assistance.

Let me understand.
You have a free wp website.
You have a domain with 1&1.

You upgraded wp to map to 1&1, is this correct?
