I will be driving to London on the 29th of march (wednesday) from Sheffield.

Im wanting to arrive between 10-11am (roughly) ill be watching a show at 2:30.

I was looking at setting off back to sheffield around 5 but now im thinking its going to be rush hour traffic.

What times would be the best for me to set off in the morning & return in the evening to miss as much traffic as possible!

Thanks

Is the train not an option??

But if you do, id suggest going A1 rather than M1 otherwise your gonna get delays on and off all the way down the M1. Via A1, youll prob only get 1 or 2 hold ups.

Probably 6 ish would cover you. Suggest park in North London and get tube in. Maybe Barnet or Totteridge/whetstone area.

Returning, suggest you delay return untill after 6/7.

where are you driving to? don't forget congestion charging

look at the RAC route planner http://www.rac.co.uk/route-planner/

it says, 2hrs 44mins to Edgware, that's not rush hour but then you need to get an underground train,

waze satnav lets you schedule your arrival

Ill be going to the lyceum theatre.

Would i get home around the same time if i set off at say 7?

I'd suggest parking at Brent Cross shopping centre and getting the tube into Leicester Square

From where? Central london or where you park your car.

Tube will take 45-60 mins to north london area-which is the hard bit done. Youll be traffic (jam) free once outside M25, still busy though. Bout 2hrs45 from M25 to sheffield M1 junction.

I work up and down the country and its a flip of a coin if there's an accident or not, so plan to arrive at least an hour early if driving! If your early get a coffee,

I would set off at 6am, but personally I prefer the M1 to M25 route rather than A1. Where are you planning on parking (North London I presume and getting the tube in?) You can use contact less cards instead of oyster cards now for public transport. Set off back after you've had some dinner and you should hopefully miss the major traffic.

I would suggest parking as far out of London as the tube network allows, as the other person said. I live near Oxford and drive to little chalfont to pick up the tube if I have to go to London.
M25 from Watford round to M40 exit is solid from 7am to well after 9am most mornings, hence why I don't use motorways. Most of the M25 is probably similar. M1 can be a real problem too at 7am before Hemel all the way past the M25 if not all the way into London.
Best of luck.

Driving into London? Don't be silly.

Get the train or the bus.

There is a car park 5 mins away from the lyceum theatre... is it not a good idea to drive into london and park there?

Congestion charge a tenner, plus the parking fee. It'll soon make £50 train ticket seem good value.

I hate trains. Might look into coach travel.

But is the congestion fee and parking fee all I have to worry about if I drive?

Yeah, driving will be fine. I think there is quite a lot of that bit of M1 restricted to 50mph because they are converting it to 'smart' motorway but you'll keep plodding along.

Plus the stress and hassle of the traffic; driving in London is ****. It will take you ages to get anywhere within central london and you will be getting 'rush' hour traffic at both ends of the day.

Have a look at some of the traffic monitoring sites to see how bad the traffic is into London on a morning.
