Depends what you smoke and where in America your going.
Cigarette prices can vary massively between states.

I have no intimate knowledge of the subject, but curiosity got the better of me so I had a look and it would seem that it would depend entirely on where OP is travelling to in the states. It can cost $13 in New York for a packet of 20, for example.

I can't vouch for the accuracy of the information on this website, OP, but it lists the average price of a packet of cigarettes in each state.

If you don't mind the white filter(Marlboro) cigarettes bought on January in Washington dc Dulles airport 6 packs(200) each cost me $ 180 and you got to be lucky to get passed the custom which is not allowed that much, have in saying that cigarettes much cheaper in America duty free...

Don't know what you smoke, but 200 Mayfair are £32 (400.£48) and Marlboro Lite £38 on Thomas Cook Airlines. Probably the same on other airlines. They are not allowed to advertise that cigarettes are for sale on board UK aircraft anymore, there is just a little note in the in-flight mag that they have them. Usually cheaper than Gatwick, but more limited choice.
