You say you are only going to watch the DVD, you don't need to pay for a tv licence if you're not using the tv you get from your ariel, i'm sure they can't make you pay for using a dvd player...

I find that arranged car boot sales (the weekly ones - our one is every sunday) seem to have an abundance of 13" crt tvs that sell for about £2 each. If you can find the closest one to your home, it's the cheapest option

try another area freecycle maybe? if you need it for a short time maybe someone could lend you one? esp if you give a lot!

Are you serious. That's like saying, "Oh, I never watch BBC so I don't need a licence". :w00t:

If the T.V. is capable of picking up a signal, then you need a license.

you can pay for a licence monthly and cancel it surely?

Just for the record the wording in the TV licence states "must be capable of receiving a TV signal", so if de-tuned and no aerial fitted, you don't need a licence.
I know this to be fact from a court appearance a few years ago where I did have a TV (for watching videos)and did not get fined

just saw this on the tv licence page
The good news is you can apply for a refund if you find that you don't need your TV Licence for any full three-month period of cover remaining on it, should you stop using TV and not need a licence again before it expires.
its aimed at students but applies im sure to you...

Thanks for the comments; I picked up a 21inch with built in DVD in Comet for £70 after a chat with the sales guys; they seem keen to clear them out.

REGARDING THE TV LICENSE

You DO NOT need a TV license if it is only used for playing games or watching DVD's on. The unit has to be detuned (no visible picture (only snow)) on the channels.
