Ok so my friend and I were discussing whether we'd put MPhys or PhD after our names when we finish our Masters/Doctorate. Personally I wouldn't want to put them after my name for anything other than professional things as it sounds a bit pompous (if thats the right word). No disrespect to people who do put legitimate things after their names if they take a lot of work to get.

Anyway we were wondering what the easiest way to get legitimate letters after your name or titles. I know about Dr Katze the cat that has PhDs and stuff but I'm not on about degree mills or whatever. Just thought it'd be quite an interesting thing see, because usually seeing lots of letters after someones name makes them seem more intelligent.

Usually only those in Academia use their PhD status. If you aren't a medical Dr, not in research or at particularly snotty schools you keep quiet. There are the odd ones that pop up like Mba. Generally you are considered a bit of a sad case if you use them otherwise.

Easiest to get, Rev ( create your own religion), MP as already stated and some online degrees for which you only need a fee....

Just change your name by Deed Poll to Lord Leonard Wilson PhD KBE. Or whatever you wish for, that way you can legally trick people into thinking you are something you are not. ;)

Perhaps the one requiring the least qualifications is 'MP' :)

Surely if you have a PhD you use Dr in front of your name? I have a BA Hons and an MSc would never dream of using the letters though. Cringe.

I second this. You might as well walk around town with your graduation cap on.

*Shaking head in disgust*
He should have told her to use the letters GTFO after her name.

My favourite quote from Red Dwarf is when Rimmer uses the letters BSc after his name - Bronze Swimming Certificate :)

I may write this in their Christmas card (that I wasn't going to send, but might do now just to do this).

Easiest to get, Rev ( create your own religion),

I think Rev is a prefix, but you can become one by being ordained, which can you do for free via an online service, you don't need your own religion. The ordaining itself must be done by a 'qualified' person. The Universal Life Church will do this for you, google will get you there.

-Rev Tony :) (Much to the dismay of my wife).

Hmm so most people aren't a fan of putting letters after the name. How about becoming a lord of Sealand :p

In my profession (lawyer) people used to put their qualifications/letters after their names (LL.B, LL.M, LL.D) all the time. However, lawyers that qualified in the last 10 years or so are now less likely to use those letters (on e-mails, letters, business cards). The same applies to no longer stating which university they went to (which I always found weird anyway). The only time qualifications and letters are used, are on CVs. 8)
