I recently had an offer from Ebay, if I sold something within the next week I would be given a £10 voucher……….Great offer :-) I’ve not sold anything for months and months (due to all the hassle and EBay fees you get hammered with) so I reckon it was to entice me back. Anyway long story short I sold something and got awarded my voucher. I used said voucher to buy some weed & feed costing £10.12. The seller had stated it was a 2.8kg bag and it should cover 200sqm, the actual item he sent was 1.6kg box and covered 80sqm so I contacted them and was offered a 50% refund and that I could keep the item. I declined and said I would prefer to return and buy elsewhere as since purchasing numerous other places were selling it cheaper anyway.

So the return went smoothly but when I was refunded the only thing I got back was 12p, the voucher wasn’t re-issued. So I contacted Ebay and spoke to an advisor who couldn’t help, so I asked to speak to a manager. They phoned me straight back, but again after explaining the issue and the manager agreeing it was no fault of my own and that I had basically thrown away £10 he again told me he couldn’t do anything about it other than he would contact the promotions team and get them to add me to a similar promotion next time there was one. I said surely there should be some kind of warning explaining vouchers cannot be re-issued as if I’d have known I’d have gone down the route of keeping said item rather than returning it and getting nothing.

Anyway the reason for my post I just wanted to make people aware if buying and using a voucher be aware you will lose it if you have an issue with the item you buy……..and in my eyes this is totally wrong and the voucher should be re-issued as I’ve actually done nothing wrong.

Rant over :-)

Comment on the Facebook page, they won't like the public negative feedback and try and sort it out. I did this(after emailing and phone calls) they sorted it out within a few hours.

The manager i spoke to was supposidly the highest person there when i spoke to them yesterday. He also agreed that it should be re-issued but apparently it cannot be done, not even the promotions team can do that. I said surely thats a flaw with your website/business. Any other big shop / supermarket etc would be able to do this or credit my account with the money..........He again agreed but repeated that Ebay has no way of doing this :(

Never thought of that :) I'll do it when i get home tonight but not holding my breath as the manager i spoke to seemed adamant that there was no way anything could be given as a result of what happened. Which i do find really hard to believe when its a mutli million pound business............I'll post an here if anything happens as a result to my Facebook post later tonight

If you were trying to get actual money back as a credit in your paypal then I can see why eBay can't refund you. As the voucher was a single use only you did use your voucher. For all eBay know you could arrange to buy a friend's item and then ask for a refund. The seller offered you a decent deal. 50% back and keep the item.
Now all you got is 12p and want to complain.

I'd also expect if you read the T&C of the voucher eBay are correct. So crying on Facebook like a spoilt idiot hopefully won't get you anywhere.

Even if the OP accepted 50% part refund, all he would have got back is 12p, the rest of the refund would be lost as it was paid via the voucher.

Ebay probably insists this is a one time voucher because if they gave you back the voucher at every refund it would open up a loophole where you can extend the lifetime of the voucher beyond its expiry date if you keep on requesting refunds.

He could have asked the seller to send it direct to PayPal as a PPG and not via ebay. this way he would have got 50% :) or £5 / £5.06

I understand that but why would anyone go through all the hassle of buying something then returning it just to get an extra week on there voucher expiry date? In my case this was totally the sellers fault for sending the wrong item and i had influence over this what so ever.

In hindsight i could have tried this but that would have had to be outside of Ebay and i very much doubt the seller would do this (i wouldn't) as then Ebay could still issue a full refund anyway via the resolution centre

You replied to the comment about writing on Facebook as a good idea.. Thus not just wanting to warn others and move on. But to see this through as justice for not knowing the T&C but still getting one over by flaming eBay on facebook. Even though the T&C will state you can't re-use the voucher..

If it helps I didn't get the voucher but thanks on the heads up.

Posting on Facebook is a good idea. Why shouldn't i get it back and i'm not trying to 'get one over on Ebay'?

If this was any other big named store this would never have happened

Did it have an expiry date? If so has it passed?
Also I'm sure it would say single use..

Contact Ebay again and be obstinate, don't be abusive and request to speak to higher ups or complaints dept

Thats a tactic they use but just remain obstinate and advise you are in the right they can help if they so choose

Will see what happens when i post the issue on Facebook, as i'm sure i'm not the first person who's lost out due to this. I'm sure it can't be that hard for them to re-issue a new voucher code and I cannot believe they aren't just doing that...........We shall see what happens later.

I had a similar thing happen - I used my voucher in the aps to purchase a make up palette 0 however when I received the make up pallet it was clearly a copy - so I had to return the item - got refunded however no item and no voucher to use

So almost the exact same issue i've had/got, as i said previously i bet this happens to no end of people and its totally wrong. :|

Did you try and do anything about it?

There's another way to make money from eBay. Every so often eBay do a 20% off up to £50 max promotion. One time I bought a HP stream 11 laptop for £129.99 from Argos eBay and paid £104 (minus 20%). When it arrived I came with a dead pixel and I returned it. I got refunded £129.99 so I unintentionally made £26.

Did you try and do anything about it?

Tbh I was annoyed at the time and again this has reminded me - but I didn't pursue anything
I also have the £10 voucher deal now so may try selling something and actually win a voucher I can use properly
#32
Same thing happened to me with an Amazon £5 voucher I got when I purchased gift cards. Ordered shoes for my son which didn't fit, returned them but they only refunded cash part not the voucher so I lost out.
#33
Had a similar thing happen to me. I used a voucher as part payment for an item (showing 2 available). Seller then contacted me to say order had been cancelled as their was a stock error and non available. Yep, I got a refund but lost the voucher and customer service said tough!
#34
Posted it on the Ebay Facebook page as 1234321 suggested and i was PM'd shortly after asking for my user details. In less than 30 mins all sorted. Apparently they have no way of re-issuing a voucher (i still find this difficult to understand how its not possible :P) but instead they returned my past Ebay fees that i had paid them to a total of £10 :)
So in a way i'm now better off as i've got no time limit when i use the credit. Its taken a bit of effort but it was the principle of what happened to me and it seems like its also happened to no end of other people as well...........Get it on their Facebook page folks - It works :D

i had same think happen, i left the seller negative feedback because they messed up and lost me £10. I'm very careful about using vouchers on eBay now.

what usually do now is list something on a friend's account, buy it for voucher value, then get them to give me the money minus fees.

You are acting like an ass. I've purchased an item with amazon using a voucher and due to issues with the product I returned it this was a single us voucher yet Amazon were happy to reissue it. Nothing wrong with asking it hurts nobody other than you
