Hi, I purchased a moto e and bought an unlock code on eBay. I tried to enter the code but I was unable to because my phones sim card slot was faulty. I've had to return the faulty phone so I no longer need the code. I know this isn't the sellers fault and the money I paid for it was pittance but I just wanted to know if they were still allowed to refuse a refund. Any help would be appreciated? Thanks.

Most eBay unlock code sellers mention on the listing description that they will not give refunds for any other reason than the unlock code not being right for your phone. It is you who is in the fault here.

I guess the fact that they supplied what you requested and this is a service not goods that is specific to you so they can't resell it they would refuse.
That said if we are talking like an under £3 unlock you'd think that they would refund as goodwill thinking you may return to them next time for being so understanding.

Where you may get him actually is that in these listings it normally states delivery by Recorded or Special Delivery, which all know doesn't happen.
If he's being a d*ck raise a dispute as item not received and make him post it either of those two ways and lose money on the transaction for the sheer hell of it because if he doesn't he won't have any tracking info for Paypal.

Thanks for all your replys. I thought maybe they would of refunded as a good will gesture. I've checked the listing and it doesn't say anything about no refunds. I did message them for help when I couldn't get my phone to request the unlock code so they should know I'm not trying to pull a fast one.

I know it was faulty but come on for a pound or so is it worth the hassle,I wouldn't dream of asking for a refund and messing them about because your phone turned out to have a problem.

Is it a business or private seller,did you ask for a refund and they said no ? I don't know how these things work,would the seller know it's not been used?

I know it's not a lot of money and I do feel stupid coming on here asking but if the seller is not following eBay selling rules aren't i well within in my rights to ask for a refund. It's a business seller and I emailed them and they said they couldn't issue a refund which is ok if they are allowed to do that.

That's what I was thinking. I can understand them not wanting to issue a refund on that basis but because I messaged them asking for help with entering the code i thought they would of known I wasn't after a freebie.

its not there fault ur phone is faulty. maybe u should of checked ur phone before purchasing the code off them and now wasting there time to get a refund for pennies.

lol, I'm a business seller on eBay, i know exactly how some buyers work and I am not that person. I also know that if my buyer is well within there rights to receive a refund I will issue it straight away even if it is a penny.

It's a sarcastic response, gesturing that they wish to block your eBay ID so they never have to deal with you.

I think personally it would be unfair for the seller to refund you, even though you could quite easily receive a refund should you wish to pursue.

wow. I can't believe some of the comments. Everybody just assuming I'm some sort of scammer after pennies. Imagine how much money they would make if they did this to every genuine buyer wanting a refund. It shouldn't matter that it's only pennies.

The unlock codes are normally generated using the phones IMEI number therefore it will be invalid on a replacement handset.

Just let it go. It probably cost you around £1.19. Yes you've not used it but I'm guessing the seller had to pay a small fee to access the code from the database. The codes can easily be entered without the seller's knowledge. If everyone did that he'd be out of business. I've ordered a code before when I didn't realise the phone was already unlocked but I've just taken the hit as it was completely my fault.

Didn't they have to acquire the keys and agent they unique to each imei so surely it cost them money to acquire it so they would be at a loss to refund

correct me if i'm wrong but for them to generate an unlock code, they need the serial/IMEI of the mobile phone, correct?

therefore, the unlock code they gave you only​ works for that exact phone? they presumably had to pay to get the unlock code from the database hence why they won't want to refund as they wont be able to do anything with the code.

the 14 days change of mind policy is not valid for 'personalised' items, which i suppose this unlock code is as it is for your phone, and your phone alone.

so unfortunately, i think you're out of luck for this instance.

They have already done the work getting the code and supplying it to you, that is the service you have paid for. It doesn't matter to them if you use the code or not, it's not like they can resell the item to someone else.

i know the code would of cost them money. I wasn't sure if there was a way for them to recoup the cost from whom ever they bought it from.

This post went downhill fast :)

To the sellers that would like to block me i would be happy to give you my eBay id but you really don't have to worry because I'm not the sort of person that would rip you off. I just wanted to know if I was able to get a refund for something like this although I already told myself I doubt it's possible.

I didn't think it was ridiculous. I deal with physical goods I didn't know how it worked with a emailed unlock code.

I think you could raise a claim via PayPal which you would probably win seeing as the seller would need proof that it was delivered BUT honestly if it were me id suck up the cost, maybe if you are nice to them they may give you a discount on another code in the future.

Thanks for your reply bluetba. I was prepared to suck up the cost I was just enquiring because I didn't know how the refund procedure worked for something like this.

I didn't know if they could recoup the cost for the unused code so they wouldn't of been out of pocket.

No. You are wrong. All sellers on eBay are bound by eBay's terms and conditions for their selling class. All sellers on eBay are not bound by the provisions of the Consumer Contracts Regulations which replaced the Distance Selling Regulations. I suggest you read this page on eBay which explains what business sellers must do and what private sellers must do.

You no longer needing the code is not justification for a refund. They've given you what you paid for. It's ridiculous that you would even think you're entitled to one. You've completely ignored the work that the seller has had to do or costs incurred to provide you with that code.

I suspect you're a 'serial returner' as referred to in this article Serial returners’ send back most of what they buy online - driving up prices for the rest of us

I wouldn't know if the code was faulty because I wasn't able to use it and please don't make assumptions about me. I am definitely not a serial returner. I asked what I thought was a simple question about something I didn't know.

I'm sorry for all the eBay sellers on here that are having a hard time with their buyers but we're not all like that.

Is this post a joke? You bought an unlock code for a phone that the phone had a issue? And you want the seller to refund on a basis that you couldn't use it on faulty device that you should know is working or not prior to buying the code? Please post your eBay id ;)
