End of phone contract with 3...help needed from the experts please :o)

Hi everyone!

I'm at the end of an 18month contract with 3 - thank god. I have had signal issues from day one, and am keen to shift elsewhere.

I pay £21 pm for Mix and Match 700 (700 mins talk time/texts and 300 three to three minutes, but I don't know anyone else with 3!). I have a Sony Ericsson K770i which I got free with the whole thing (via Carphone Warhouse Shop, d'oh - caught me at a low ebb).

I'm really hankering after a Sony Ericsson W995, my nephew has a C902 which I thought was fab, the music he managed to hold on there and the sound was great. But I understand the W995 is even better and more reliable? I'm not up on downloading music onto mobiles but I was really taken with how much he could hold (and he got the music free of charge..cough!)

Anyway. I'm a newbie to the whole bartering thing and am not sure where to start to make sure I get the best deal. We're on a tight budget...as is everyone I'm sure at the mo!

I'm also pretty green when it comes to the phones, and so would appreciate any advice?

Was planning on a trip to Carphone Warehouse today but am hanging fire as I may end up doing something I will later regret, lol!

Many thanks everyone,

Luce xx

Firstly........do not go back to Carphone Warehouse, go via cashback site ie Quidco or Topcashback as you'll get upto £100 back for a contract

Secondly, do you use all of your allowance each month ?

I do tend to use all my allowance, apart from the 3 to 3, and I do tend to use it for sending pics of the kids which tots up, usually around a fiver a month.

I don't use the internet on it at all as I'm a stay at home Mum and have my pc

My husband is with Orange and has been for a while...I'm wondering if that would help me get a deal from them? (Although having said that, his signal is not fabulous. Still better than mine though ...)

Thanks again for helping. I really regretted the last deal I did with the Carphone Warehouse and I couldn't cancel it, I felt sick about it for ages. I'm trying to avoid that happening again!

To find the stongest signal from a provider click on the map and type in your postcode:

http://www.sitefinder.ofcom.org.uk/

It will show local masts in your area.

Orange weren't good for me either but if your hubby still has a long time left with Orange he could add you as a family member to get you a good deal if he's good at negotiating.

I've just been on the phone to 3, they've offered unlimited internet access, unlimited texts, 200 minutes talk time, a C903 on an 18 month contract with a free phone upgrade after 14 months for £19.57 a month.

I'm reluctant though because my signal has been so poor with 3 - but the guy on the phone was adamant signal issues with 3 weren't a problem now as they have new software and use the Orange network instead of O2 (is that bs or am I cynical???). Also, I'd read that the C903 had problems with cutting out, which put me off a bit. Though he says it's better than the W995.

And I reeeeally wanted the W995, though I'm not that up on phones so I may be misguided..

Hmmm.

:?

Am going to get hubby to ring Orange although he's not showing any signs of feeling like it. Hmmpf.

Are you sure thats what the renewal offer was? You can get same deal online for £18 a month and if you go through Quidco you will get £47.50 cashback! this is for a new contract rather than a renewal.

I called up 3 several weeks ago, I was on Mix N Match 500, they offered me a free C903, a free bluetooth headset, the same 500 MixNMatch plan plus the free unlimited internet all for £10 a month on my renewal?

I'd give them a call again....tell them that you do wish to renew but you would like to know what they can offer you, so, if you have a phone in mind that you want then tell them this and see what they say....if they say yes immediately then push for something else....say unlimited texts......

I did this when I called, based on their response and every time I said "well what I will do is go away and have a think about it and compare your offer to other network offers available"...thats when they offered me the free bluetooth headset, the free C903 and the free unlimited internet....

Good luck....but based on the offer they have given you then I'd definitely decline that as its not much of an offer in your favour.

Thanks for the advice  I really was trying to get off the phone too, I thought it was the best he could do as I wasn't sounding remotely interested, lol.

I really am hankering after the W995 but they said it would be £150 for the phone and £30.34 per month on Mix and Match 700. :-(

Thanks for letting me know what they offered you, certainly gives me a bit more bargaining power! What do you think of the C903 now you have it?

To be honest, I'm more of a Nokia person, but the Sony Ericsson C903 is a fantastic little slide phone, it has all the applications you could want, free skype, msn, built in GPS and sat nav, also with a free app called Near me that will tell you the nearest places to your position, like restaurants, petrol stations, supermarkets..things like that. Its got a radio, menu options to show music, pictures, videos, games and even TV (I think you need to subscribe to the TV thing tho).

Its got an email client so you can check your email on the phone too, facebook, msn, youtube, yahoo, google, bebo, myspace, twitter...literally loads on the phone. and the best of all it has a slide at the back so you can use it as a 5MP digital camera too.

I dont know much about the W995 but the C903 is a cracking little phone. The only thing that I dont like about it is the battery life, you will prob have to charge it every 2nd day or so if you use it a lot, especially the GPS but you can switch the GPS off to save battery life. Other than that I cant see, nor have found any other bad points about it.

The C903 sound pretty good - the W995 has got rave reviews pretty much across the board, it is a Walkman style phone although I'm wondering now whether the W595 is also worth considering...

Love the sound of the Near Me application on the C903 too though - very useful! Oh I'm losing the will to live slightly though the more I think about the different types. Wouldn't it be easier if either there was less choice or no internet to surf to read the millions of reviews!? Argh!

I wonder what folk think about the guys comments from 3 re the signal strength - I've heard that they tell you anything to keep you, I'm just wondering if 3 have actually improved this or whether it was just to stop me from moving elsewhere? :?

I have just come off the phone to 3 (again - he insisted on rniging me back when I said don't post the phone!) and the offer he made STILL wasn't as good as the deal online! When I told hin someone I know had a better deal he just said we don't do big discounts like that anymore...hmmmmm.

I tried explaining that I could do better going through Quidco direct through the Three.co.uk website, and he started talking in pigeon English about having to send in bills and reclaim the cashback, despite me trying to explain several times abuot how Quidco works.

In the end I got fed up and put the phone down :x

I'm looking at all other providers apart from 3 now, bloody things. I was very nice and polite, but even that didn't work.

So back to googling deals on the W995 I think!

Thanks so much for your help folks.

I'm searching for a better deal - not difficult to find, I have to say! - I may just give Three one last shot (possibly after a session of acupuncture and a few ibuprofen) to see if that really was the best they could do.

Still after a W995 and hoping that they will be old news and cheaper by 3rd November when my contract ends  Very doubtful but I live in hope!

Thanks again! :) x
