I'm looking for a good deal on an engagement ring for my long suffering Girlfriend. I can spend up to £300. I'm not well versed in buying jewellery.

try beaverbrooks i went in with 4 grand cash , and got a £5000 ring , just bargained them down .
Totally haggle them.. I started with h Samuel and the fact that at meadow hall Sheffield you can get 10% off if you sign up for the shopper card there (not sure if they still do it). I then used that as my bargaining chip to ring other h Samuels and eventually had 2-3 trying to offer me a better deal. Ended up getting a £1300 ring for £1000 with 3 years insurance for free. Good luck :)
not sure where you live but the jewellrey quater in birmingham is great. you have to shop around there though. we had our wedding rings made there and the quotes varied from £1400 to £600 oO you get get there easily on the train too as it has its own station
We got mine off ebay, is a blue diamond just over a carat, very unusual and always get comments, paid 445 and valued elsewhere for 2,000 so worth looking about.
Have a look on Ernest Jones at the minute, quite a few in their sale
