Hi all. I've just recently got a new PC (secondhand). I've installed Windows 10. (I've been out of the computer scene for a number of years) I'd like to hear suggestions on what software to install. I've downloaded Firefox because I liked it the most as an alternative to IE. I looked VLC but couldn't find it an downloaded 5K player. What suggestions would you give me. I was planning on buying a license of Kaspersky(2017, 5 or 10 devices off Ebay) (i've downloaded the free trial) but there was a deal for 2016 version (10 devices but I could give them to my family aswell). I've also downloaded malware bytes, I thought it was free but I keep getting pop ups asking to sihn up. Cheers, Ste

ninite.com is usually my first port of call after a fresh build. Tick the boxes of the apps you want and it'll GI and install them automatically

Malwarebytes is free, but will sometimes prompt you to sign up or pay to unlock more features, you can always use it for free.

Open office is a great alternative to Microsoft Office and works with all the same file types, check this out if you need a word processor on the cheap/free.

Mozilla Firefox and Chrome are the obvious choices for a browser, they both perform similarly so it's down to personal preference. I would also recommend an adblocker like ublock origins. You can whitelist for sites you want to support through as revenue.

The others would be Acrobat reader for PDFs, Adobe flash as some web content hasn't quite made the switch yet, you could also do with Java but make sure its up to date

As a tip, check out ninite for multiple app installers at the same time, this is a great tool for new PCs.

In terms of antivirus, any are a good choice, but don't overpay and if you are buying one, make sure it's legitimate. The best antivirus is common sense, avoid suspicious websites, don't open suspect attachments from emails, and don't believe the sites that say you've won a fiver in asda vouchers. ;)

sounds like you are over doing the virus protection. I just use the default with win 10. what are you going to be doing on the PC? I have paint. vlc is free and a good video player. I also have Plex for my movie library. and then as you need additional programmes just search.

avast all the way, don't bother with Kaspersky
Get yourself also ccleaner, it's a great tool to keep your operating system clean

Thanks for the replies, I don't want to click a best answer as I appreciate all your replies. I'm going to head over to ninite now. I'll have a another look for VLC as in the past it played anything. I forgot to say I've allready downloaded adobe PDF and flash.

I like the idea of having a central point for storing passwords and usernames. Kaspersky includes this I think and it's less than £15 for 10 devices ( I can give the extra ones to my family aswell).

I do go on dubious sites and torrents sometimes leads to fantastic discoveries ( Books, magazines etc). I've allready downloaded utorrent.

Cheers, Ste

Wow. I've just checked out ninite.com and I'm amazed at how simple that makes a new install a breeze. More software than I need and some that I've never heard of. Cheers, Ste.

I'd take Media Player Classic over VLC. VLC used to be good because it supported lots of media types in an era where there were a lot of conflicting standards, but these days, it's redundant at that, and it's just an ancient media player with an awful UI and awful image quality. MCE has a few shortcomings, but it's miles ahead of VLC.

Op, I personally like either kaspersky or eset for protection, as for your malwarebytes when you install the free version if you enable to free trial of pro then it will keep asking you to sign up, just delete and re install the free without pro trial

Avast used to be my antivirus of choice, but they now pester you so much to buy their more premium products, it's becoming really annoying.

I now use antivirus provided by the ISP.

You said you use uTorrent. Don't bother with that any more. It used to be good, now it's not.

Deluge is the best ad free and spyware free torrent app.

Look on http://www.filehorse.com/ to see if you're missing anything. Don't bother with any booster/optiizer/driver updating apps.

If you torrent, I don't use pc-based apps, I now use sites like http://www.seedr.cc and find magnets via https://zooqle.com/

I've allready got Chrome (think I prefer Firefox but not sure). Got Picasa and MPC. File horse is a great site, Thanks for the heads up. Need to do a bit more research into seedr but think it may be very usefull as an alternative to torrents.Just tried zoogle, never heard of it till now, it looks impressive. Thanks for all the links.

It has a vpn built in? I'll have to check this out. Who provides the VPN? Does it include torrents? Does it keep logs? Probably many more questions to ask. I'll have to look into it, Cheers.

IIRC current owners of Opera purchased Surfeasy VPN a while back....
Obviously not going to be as good as a fully paid VPN service but for usage like avoiding Geo tracking for World TV streaming/foreign payments etc.. etc it should be sufficient.

I'm trying Deluge. Is there a way that I can download specific files from within the torrent, I used to be able to but that was probably with utorrent.

Just click on the files tab, right click on the individual files and then deselect etc
