I've received an email from Europcar claiming that due to some system issue they hadn't taken payment of a hire back in August!

I don't really see them giving a car without payment going through. Anyways they wish to take payment in the next 7 days, however haven't disclosed the amount, but i don't really have any spare money right now. In addition, i believe i payed by credit card which i cancelled in December as the cashback rates had changed (santander)

Does anyone know where i stand with this matter, can they really request payment after several months?

Has anyone been in a similar situation?

Thanks in advance

First of all check with the credit card company to see if you have already paid them. They would still have a record even though you have closed the account. If you haven't paid then contact the hire company DIRECTLY and come to an agreement as to how, how much and when to pay. That would rule out the chance of phishing. Should be straightforward. Don't worry.

That was my original thought, but it had my name and address on the letter, and it wasn't exactly suspicious looking,I'm guessing i'll wait to see if one comes through the post before i respond. Didn't actually request for Bank Details which makes me believe its genuine.

Just contact them directly making sure the phone number you use is real number and not taken off the letter.

If you have a reservation number just ring europcar directly, don't use the phone number in the email. Ask them if the payment has been made and take it from there. Saves having to ring the credit card company first.

This.
And in answer to your question, yes that can claim back the money as you entered into a contract with them.
If cash is about tight at the moment, contact them direct to try to come to an agreement. They should halo as it was their fault, but having dealt with this company before, Europcar are a bunch of pr**ks.

Cheers for the response... Just wanted to know if this something that occurs regularly!
Don't really hire but that is definetly the last. Going to try going for a £10 / month! :D

don't phone as there is no accurate record of what is said or agreed. write to them asking for confirmation details of the transaction that they are referring to. Simply refer to them having apparently sent an email which could be a phishing attempt.

Ask for them to communicate in writing as you do not trust email for financial conversations.

Do not wait as that doesn't help. Also contact CC company and ask for old statements explaining that there is confusion over one transaction. If they want to charge you ask if they can confirm a payment to company around that month..
