External Hard Drive (2.5", USB)

HI,

Since my USB memory stick got bashed in today (someone walked into it while it was sticking out the computer I think) I need to replace it (it still works but I am needing a bigger capacity and now have doubts about its reliability since the USB was very bent).

Since I am having a lot of fairly big files to transfer recently I figure it's probably worth just picking up a little portable hard dirve but am not looking to spend much.

Can get both 40 and 60GB on a well known auction website for a little around £30 however don't really want to buy there.

Is there anything out there around 30GB+ for no more then £30-35?

Thanks very much

I was in the same boat as you guys and losts all my kiddies photos, they were due to be transferred to disc that night when I dropped it. The good news is that I managed to retrieve 75% of them from various sources, I had duplicates elsewhere.

Anyway, in light of this I purchased last week a Seagate FREEAGENT DESKTOP 250GB Hard Drive from Amazon for £45.99, free postage too. It has been fluctuating between £45.99 - £52 for a few days as a friend wants one now. But if you buy it at £52 and it drops below that, you can claim for a refund of the difference if it is within 30 days.

The drive itself is very sturdy, neat design and unbelievably quiet, and its a case of plug into the mains and a usb port and you are up and running.

Its getting good reviews from other members too (4/5 stars)

Good luck if you decide to purchase.

Thanks a lot for the recommendation gottohave it, however I was looking for a portable drive (i.e. 2.5" and USB powered) as opposed to a desktop drive like this.

What about a Hitachi 1.8" HD 30GB. Mine was fantastic until it was stolen out my car glove box. Has good shock protection and is small enough to pop in your pocket. About £33 from dealextreme.

Thanks very much GAVINLEWISHUKD, am really attracted by the size of a 1.8" HD, especially since it is supposedly branded Hitachi.

Having said that...dealextreme....do I want to spend that amount at dealextreme for something that could well be a knock off? hmm.

Best option so far though!

I bought mine from dealextreme and was ok. Dont think it is something that would be easy to rip off. Will be getting myself another one but cant decide to get the 30GB or 60GB.

That's true :)

Argh, pain about the delivery times with DX...would have liked this ASAP but the size is a real draw to it...pity there aren't any on other sites cheaply (that I know of)

Not cheap in the uk. I emailed loads of companies that dont list them and they all want silly money in the uk. I even spoke to Hitachi business customer services and they told me they are seen as a business item in the uk so retailers what to make a good mark up and as nobody else in the uk have a product like this prices never come down.

EMS shipping from DX will cost you about £8 extra.
