External Hard Drive - 320GB or 500GB

I'm after a 3.5" External Hard Drive, either 320GB or 500GB. Main use is going to be back ups of photo's / videos, used probably twice month.

Can anyone advocate a particular brand or model, I have seen a Western Digital My Book and Seagate Free Agent in both sizes, that have taken my fancy, but both are littered with contradicting reviews.

I know its the nature of hard drives to fail now and again, but I want one thats going to last years, rather than months!?

Any ideas?

I have used WD My Book and World Book 1TB and both have performed well over the last few months. The PSU units do get quite warm though but aprat from that all has been well. Transfer speeds are ok and software very good.

I bought both mine from PC World as I have had to exchange some items (sometimes a few months after purchase) and they have never even quibbled once - even one I said I had to move locations and the white casing looked all wrong and could I swap it for a black one! They said fine.

You shouldn't have any hard drives fail within months. I think the warrenty on hard drives these days is 3-5 years so they should last at least that long in daily use.

Western digital and Seagate are both big brands so you shouldn't have any reliability problems. As long as the reviews didn't highlight any problems with the software that comes with them (if you plan to use it) then I'd just pick the cheapest/better looking of the two.

Thanks! The only HD I have read with bad software reviews is the Maxtor One Touch, which sounded like a good idea, but very poor reviews!
