I'm just wondering if anyone has ever had same problem as me . I got a car a few years ago (vw polo) from a used car dealer in my area. when I purchased the car it come with a fresh 12 months mot which had no advisorys on it . so when it comes for me to get the mot done 12 months later it failed on something to do with the exhaust. anyway we got it fixed and through it mot but later when I come e to check the cars mot's from the past on a app on noticed the year I got it had failed on the same thing . so how did the seller get it a new mot with no advisorys to sell it to me .was it a fake ? as when I got it done why would the same thing pop up which surely he should of got fixed to get it to pass the mot when he sold it me . now I'm about to buy a new car which this time I checked it's past mot's on the car and before I paid any cash that the advisory from the last mot would be sorted and he said yes it will come with a fresh 12 month mot with no advisorys but I'm now thinking he hasn't done the jobs and somehow just got it a mot . has this ever happened to anyone else and how do they get away with it ?

funny how you say this. I use an app to check the dodgy looking cars parked outside after twice being hit by uninsured drivers and one Polish idiot who gave me the bird and drove off after hitting my car. I did see one that failed for missing Wing mirror and something else only a month before. guess what.. it passed a day later but funny enough has the same Wing mirror missing... so yes I think some places must be passing cars as the owner is saying that they will fix it or the garage is clearly bent.
on the flip of that a punto we had needed 2 or 3 suspension strutts in under 2 Years.. both times just out of warranty.. if we had sold it in between then it would have failed for the same thing.. but obviously we know that it was replaced..

What did it fail on exactly previously and this year ?

Might not be fake , could easily had a bodge job on the exhaust to pass the first MOT probably a bit of welding on a old exhaust, remember the MOT only means the car was ok on the day of the MOT.....

When I was in the trade dodgy dealers would even take a good part off another car, fit to another to pass the MOT and then take the good part back off...

yeah it happens a bunch, though i wouldnt say common, contact DVSA if you have been scammed and you can also check on their website.

on this new one it said about brake pads and something else but he said they would be sorted . maybe he has and I'm just thinking it hasn't because it's happened to me before on the vw polo .

Getting a dodgy MOT is far too easy, I know of plenty garages that will pass a car on the basis you promise to have the work fixed soon after, MOT due in the middle of the month, paid at the end, no problem they say :(
You just promise to give them the repair job.

I had a mondeo a few years ago that failed 3 years on the bounce on the emissions because the catalytic converter was knackered, something to do with it burning oil. Anyway the point is it failed I got it fixed, it failed again on the same thing the next year so it doesn't necessarily mean that the work wasn't done

It failed on emissions
Could be anything
Knackered sensor
Knackered cat
Cat failing and not hot enough
When was it last serviced etc etc
If yours had a replacement cat from euros you will be lucky if it lasts a year as replacement ones are tiny on the VW's and not fit for purpose

Very true. We can only test it as it is on the day. I once failed a car for brake pipes and a few other things. Owner took it away and came back with the brake pipes rubbed down and painted. I had to pass the car as i cant see under paint and theoretically you cant prove its the same pipe. Put an advisory on saying i suspected pipes hadnt been changed

Diesel or petrol mate?

the exhaust when I got it done the garage said it was the original one from new so no work was done on it the year I got it. clearly someone in a garage passing cars for a mate by sounds of it to me .

use free Vehicle Smart app on Android phones to check MOT validity, history and previous advisories.

I saw an undercover program on tv with Donal MacIntyre. He went to loads of little garages and got dodgy MOT certificates. Some even issued them without even seeing his car. Lol. Others just overlooked problems with it like missing wing mirrors and a cracked windscreen.

What's the best free app out there?

This is basic and free. Not what you asked for but worth looking at https://www.gov.uk/check-mot-status

is it the same garage doubt a garage is going to put a car with dodgy brakes through there are some dodgy mother places but they don't compromise on brakes tires and structural welding they just don't be as strict on things like wiper blades cleaning properly or wiper fluid has ran out. or a blown bulb as they don't care because a bulb can fail anytime. but a exhaust failing and passing suggests the car has been motd properly as the dodgy places would pass it in first place without a advisory probably had some exhaust paste put on which will get the mot to pass last for about 2 days waste of a fiver.

I use vehicle specs on android. It tells you tax prices, when it was first registered, mot date and view old and recent mots, emissions and mileage all for free you can pay for more detailed information like stolen or finance or been written off if you wish but free information is enough for me when I purchased cars

that definitely sounds like a small hole which would have been patched up especially if u drove it for 1 year and didn't notice it before the mot yourself so I wouldn't worry about it.

Not sure if this is well known Many local councils have their own MOT testing stations for their own vehicles, such as buses or vans.

By law these test centres (though not taxi or Crown stations) must be open to the general public. As they generally only carry out tests and don't do repairs (always check), there's no incentive for mechanics to find faults that don't exist

What did the exhaust actually fail for?

check now before you buy new car. Ask seller relevant info to check mot history :{
#25
It's likely the MOT tester or garage will have been sweetened to give the car a clean MOT.

Also, I wouldn't trust an app I would just go straight to https://www.gov.uk/check-mot-history
