I'm getting fed up with Virgin constantly upping the price of the package we have with them and considering swapping.

We currently have 30mb Broadband which is due to be upgraded for 'free' to 60mb. (I was happy with 30mb) - we also have a land line because it was cheaper to have it (we don't use it or have anything plugged into it). We have one of the more basic TV packages (don't think it is the lowest) - with a 500GB Tivo Box.

We don't watch much more than BBC1, BBC2, ITV, Ch4, Ch5, BBC3, CBBC, CBeebies and the odd bit of music on the music channels. However the ability to record is preferred as we're never at the TV at the right time.

We don't have a satellite dish or an aerial as we've always had virgin. We're happy enough with the service but just not happy about the constant price hikes.

I use HDMI Splitters to share the TV service to 2 other TV's and a wireless remote system to allow the remotes to work in other rooms (All TVs have the same program on but we're happy at that!)

So which is best to swap to? They all seem to do recording versions. They all seem to come with channels we watch. We need HDMI out.

Are there any particular pieces of hardware that are better - I've used some freeview systems which seemed really slow and laggy to use.

Any other advice?

They all "up" their prices. I've tried so many times to leave Virginia but nobody out there can compete with them for services.

Virgin not Virginia - stupid predictive text

I'm with sky but I'm going over to virgin media now its in my village. I looked into freeview ect but they all said I needed a new aerial at a cost of around £100-150. plus the price of a quality viewing box. so I passed , not worth it for what I would gain.

hey buddy you want a humax box, there around 200£ for a good one it has a harddrive so you can record ect really worth it, then no paying, then just jump to a sky broadband, for around £20 month with landline, :)

One of the biggest cons: Digital/ Analog aerials are the same, they simply relabeled the boxes, your old one should be just fine. There is no such thing as a "Digital" aerial!

OP you need a sat dish, an aerial or broadband to get anyone else's content, Freesat probably offers the most at little or no cost(dish/receiver).

I'm now having to pay £46 per month. It was £36 per month not long ago but has steadily risen :(

Broadband is increasing to 50mb in the next few weeks (I'm sure it said 60mb last time I looked!) However 30mb is more than adequate so I would rather stay as I am and not pay an increase!

I don't mind staying with virgin for just the broadband if they will do it on it's own.

@whelan189 - is the Humax a freesat or a freeview box?

Humax is generally Freeview or Freeview+ but other options include Youview - you'd need an aerial
Freesat you'd need to install a sat dish

What have retentions @ Virgin offered you - if it's crap - what would be the offer for a new "user" (get your partner/friend to register new account).

http://store.virginmedia.com/big-bundles.html Big Easy is £32.99 for 1yr then £48.99

Or go to Humax Direct for even better prices for Humax boxes (Managers specials)

ok what Virginia does is ups the price u just need to phone them and tell them u r leaving and they will drop prices down for you it worked for me just search for the deals they have online and if u r paying more than u should tell them otherwise they will just charge u more and more

I switched from Freeview to Freesat as my ariel signal was flaky and inconsistent. Got a dish and a Humax Freesat PVR and never looked back. The only downside is not too many HD channels but you'll get all the ones you need apart from C5
#11
Not got Sky or even the option of Virginia here. Stuck on circa 2.5mb ADSL. We just stick with Freeview HD in two TVs and standard definition on the one in our room.

Initially intended to get Sky, but more than six years later we have realised we just don't need it. No easy ability to record but don't miss that either, catch up and repeats is easy.
For me, Freeview or Freesat everytime although I do have a Spiderbox which is kind of handy. Premium tv just isnt worth it in my mind

This. I couldn't get a signal, rung them up and they said buy a digital aerial. Spent a measly £6 on a standard signal booster and I had no problems whatsoever.

Call customers services now - see what they offer - if you don't like ask for retentions.

Look at this thread http://www.hotukdeals.com/deals/virgin-media-retention-deal-2095475 it's voted cold but still cheaper than yours but same options. You need to get to grips with bartering/negotiating and making a stance. Do not always accept a price increase.

Just ring them up and tell them how unhappy you are with the price increases. Mention how long you've been with them and say you've been offered a deal by sky. They should make you a counter offer. If they don't hang up and try again.

I tried phoning but the department I needed closes at 8pm. Will phone again tomorrow.

The bloke on the phone upgraded me instantly to 50MB and said the £3.99 increase will be waived. I said I didn't want that as I want to cancel and didn't want it to affect anything. No idea if he did it or not but he assured me no contract was made and it will make no difference to the conversation tomorrow.

I thought the £46 was with the price increase as it had jumped up about £4 to the last bill in Nov, but apparently the £3.99 extra is from Feb so there will be another price which will make it a tad over £50/month.

Not happy with that much for BB, basic TV and a Tivo box. Especially when we watch very little TV.

I'd be happy to keep the BB on it's own but they want nearly £30 for that! - I'll see if they can do me a good deal for BB and will keep that and drop the rest.

£30 for BB only - you are seriously being ripped off - you need to up your pressure but understand that if it fails you'll need to go to the other options...why? because I have Virgin Media BB @ 50mb (over 2 yrs now) and it's only £20.49 - no phone, no tv just BB
#19
I've told them I want to cancel. I'm happy enough to cancel to be honest. I can sort some kind of BB out. I'm not too fussed as long as it is 10mb+

I have good 3G signal here so can tether my phone temporarily if required.

I either want what I have now for more like £30 per month not £50, or failing that BB on its own for less than £20. If they won't do that then I'll walk.
#20
Must be lots of people cancelling - been on hold for 20 minutes already :(

Ended up getting:

TV
Tivo
HD Channels
TV Package M
50Mb BB
Phone with weekend calls
6 Months Netflix

They ended up coming down from £50/month to £33.99/month.
#22
I'm a Virgin Media customer and tbh I'm not happy about my £4.50 increase..BUT no one else where I live can compete with them speed or reliability wise. BT or Sky can get no where near 60mb here, even though I'm on the 152mb tier.
#23
just dump the TV

dont forget you can now pay your line rental upfront for a year which saves around £50
