My son has a basic pc but would like a gaming pc. He plays a lot of Minecraft and other games. He does normal everyday things and says his pc is very slow and laggy. I've been told he needs at least 8gb of ram,a fast processor and good graphics card. I have no idea what to look for and have a budget of up to £500. He also wants to record /stream. Don't need monitor just tower. Is Amazon/Ebay a good place to buy?.I would be grateful if you could point me in the right direction. Thanks

Afraid I cant offer any better alternatives to the one suggested above, but have to say it's not a great PC for gaming as is.

First off you really would want to replace the generic power supply asap with a good branded one, which will up the cost. May not be one of the fancy components, but saving money there is asking for trouble, Honest.

And also the graphics card may well start to struggle with newer games, 2GB of card memory seems to be the minimum requirement nowadays, With a 4GB card giving you a little more breathing room.

good luck

He mainly plays Minecraft and wants to record/stream. He downloaded games from Steam but wasn't able to play I'm guessing down to memory? .Want something that will do this and normal everyday use.

First off, what is the spec of the current system?

Many motherboards can take much better cpu's, faster RAM and better GFX, and doing this is often cheaper than buying a whole new PC.

As above, a beefier system will need a better BRANDED psu, an unbranded one may claim enough power, but rarely meets that claim, and often goes BANG if you try.

An upgrade example, my daughters PC came with a decade old Intel E4300 Core 2 Duo cpu, over Christmas it will be getting fitted with a Quad Core Xeon, about 10 times more powerful and still listed as a high end cpu..

BTW, Slow can mean virus, and laggy is often the internet connection, or another infection called "conduit".

He should go on proper porn sites he will get less :p

Use chrome or Firefox and get popup blocker add ons. Pop ups can be caused for viruses/malware/bloatware. Check installed programs for anything you don't recognise and Google the name, sometimes you can accidently install something without thinking.

Also ignore my above post this PC looks great; http://www.awd-it.co.uk/awd-aegis-intel-i5-6400-3.3ghz-quad-core-8gb-2133mhz-ddr4-gtx-750ti-2gb-gaming-pc-system.html

AWD Aegis Intel i5 6400 3.3GHz Quad Core, 8GB 2133MHz DDR4, GTX 1050 2GB Gaming PC System £499

Yeah really any AWD-IT pc with 1050, RX460, 1050ti are good (avoid the 750ti ones) on your price range and would work for mine craft/streaming . If you can stretch to it though the "
AWD Aegis Intel i5 6400 3.3GHz Quad Core, 8GB 2133MHz DDR4, GTX 1050 2GB Gaming PC System £499" is great value for money, but no operating system, so if you need one you can pick a lower priced one and add it if you do not wish to buy one separately.

which is best Intel or AMD ?
#12
also should I uninstall Mcaffee security ?. been told not very good
#13
"also should I uninstall Mcaffee security ?" Absolutely !! Let all those viruses he has; run free, and see the speed difference. :(
"been told not very good" who told you that ? - they need a slap. -its as good as most other AV's and better than some.

Do a full disinfection of the machine - it will probably take many many hours. Once that is done get him to download the free version of Malwarebytes anti-malware software and run that - again it will probably take "quite a while" to remove all the crap on the machine. Then defrag the hard drive. Else: take it to PC World and pay them lots of money for doing much the same thing.

You haven said what CPU or Memory or graphics card he got. What PSU it has, or what OS it's running? --32bit Windows OS's cant use more than 4GB of memory.
Building a good gaming PC is way more complicated then just throwing the latest and greatest hardware graphics card and memory at it. -and if you did just that, you would blow your budget many times over and still not achieve the best bangs per buck.

so I need to get rid of Mcaffee AV ? and then what. he had loads viruses before I installed it but it's made no difference. what do I need to do about AV ?
#17
have just had looong! online chat with AWD but not really got anywhere. I'm such a novice I have no idea what to buy even though I've been looking for weeks and time is running out please help!!
#18
Are you okay with building a PC or do you want a prebuilt?
What storage does the current PC come with?
#19
would need a prebuilt as a complete novice. He's just got a basic mini tower at the moment

I would go with AWD, in particular this one:

http://www.awd-it.co.uk/awd-aegis-intel-i5-6400-3.3ghz-quad-core-8gb-2133mhz-ddr4-gtx-750ti-2gb-gaming-pc-system.html

It has a newer Intel platform which allows for future upgradability, with a choice of much much more powerful processors. The GTX 1050 graphics card will manage to run games such as Minecraft fine at 1080p, easily upgraded in the future anyhow, it really is quite simple to change one. That particular I5 6400 processor and that RAM should allow for him to be able to stream just fine, providing your internet is capable of streaming fine. As others have said that they come with no operating system, but that can be bought from many reputable Ebay sellers for £25 or so.

Hope that helps. Good luck in your search.
