We have a very old combi boiler in our house about 20 years old, which we have fitted a wireless thermostat to it. It is possible but please don't try yourself if you are not confident in electrical work, as it may cause yourself or the boiler harm.

I found old diagrams of our boiler and worked out which wire did what, pretty much any thermostat will work with the boiler as all they are are on off switches. But there are ones that do only heating, or dual water and heating.

Normally 3 main wires that go into a heating stat, live, neutral and request heat.

Most people are banging on about the Netatmo. Think I'll get one when I go to upgrade my boiler.

I looked at smart thermostats, but for the cost it didn't seem viable for energy saving to cost ratio. So paid £15 for a bog standard timer wireless stat. Has already paid its worth since fitting compared to the old boiler timer.
