Hello people, I've been getting a lot of abuse from a fake account on instagram, they know a lot about me and my wife, they've also been levying quite a few threats. The abuse has now extended to texts received from the above number. Would there be any way to find out the origin of that number? It's causing a lot of upset..

Thanks in advance

go see the police.
#3
Go to police, they're pretty keen on being proactive on cyber bullying and online harassment. They will track them down.
#4
Like others have said go to police. They do take these matters seriously.
#5
Talk to that police, that number is obviously fake, which means they're using a spoofing service :)
#6
Install should I answer app. You can block it with this but it has a community who review the calls and it tells you who is sending them. Good luck.

Thanks for the suggestions, much appreciated. I'm off social media but I've also been getting emails too. My wife has mainly been getting the calls but she's switched on the option for rejecting private calls so they now only appear as a notification.

In terms of going to the police, I've heard from some people that they can't really do much and simply log the complaint.

please take into account the number 7 is very ominous, maybe you are being targeted politically . i dont think the number of 7s is random but yes criminals can impersonate numbers including bank numbers etc for various reasons,

How did they manage to get your wifes phone number. Are you sure its not a wind up

About 8 years ago I got calls and texts from someone similar to your situation. I reported it to police. They found out who it was. Can't remember if I went in or called first but I ended up going into station at one point. Turned out to be a creepy neighbour!!!! Good luck with it I know how it makes you feel. It's truely horrifying that someone would do that <3
Also contact your mobile network provider and report it to them. They have to release the info to the police and may b able to block them without you having to see it on your phone as a missed call in notifications

As previously stated inform the police . It may not immediately solve the problem but could ring bells with their database and link to other complaints . It may not help straight away but you will have the pleasure of knowing that somewhere down the line a scumbag will get their just desserts.

have you ever tried to report extreme trolling to the Police? you have a misplaced confidence in them, they serve the elites not the public . Our police are horribly corrupt

No , they will just log it I presume ? But then it may tie up with data they have . I did say don't expect an immediate result . Those of us who pay our taxes can't afford the number of policemen we would really wish for so we must just give the police the information and hopefully it will be logged and eventually made use of .
Welcome to the site by the way - I hope your future comments will be more constructive :(

Thanks a lot for your response. Yeah, it's really creepy as they know a lot about us. It's been going for a few months and as soon as it's a bit quiet, the abuse will start again. Neither one of us has had problems with anyone in the past so we are struggling to think who it could be. It's gotten to a stage where this person is hacking into her school laptop and planting seedy material on there in the hope of the school finding it and sacking her..

how do you think this will resolve itself if you do not contact the police? do you really want to be more scared than you are? this is hate crime - report it

In what way are they hacking into the laptop? Im not being rude but its actually quite hard to do and your average troll wouldnt be able to. Is it likely to be someone working withyour wife? Seems likely

Make sure its all reported to the police ,the school and your employer , then if things happen they are prewarned and it won't come to a sacking . I'm afraid this sort of thing is becoming prevalent as folks live their lives in a fantasy on Facebook etc and don't have real lives .

My advice to those sort of people is to get down the Pub and meet real people ( not to get drunk ) and socialise the way humans have done for centuries. If you got out of order in a Pub you would get told (or a punch on the nose at the worst !) . These bedroom fantasists wouldn't say boo to a goose , but feel big as they can create havoc with a minimal amount of IT savvy . My advice- grow a thicker skin and ensure it is reported to all it could effect .

That 100% is not possible for the vastest majority of hackers to do.

Either you have majorly piddled off the wrong people, or something isn't adding up.
Someone highly likely is using the laptop whilst it's left unattended.

Passwords for ~everything~ need to be changed, the laptop in question needs to be properly scanned for viruses and malware (I recommend MalwareBytes, totally free and as effective or moreso than the majority of paid programs) and the laptop itself has to be kept more securely.

As for your phones, get your providers involved and to block withheld numbers.

ok I. assume you have reported this or ur wife has to her employer show them the stuff.thay has been planted unless u suspect the head of the schools it department involved in this the head of the school maybe able to get it tracked down to whom has pit this on the laptop via the IT team of the school if they're involved let the head teacher know not to ask them with any investigation and go to the police. school networks aren't very difficult to hack or weren't when I was in school anyway there always one kid who went on a think a y drive or some other area and he could see everyone's passwords on it but he didn't really do anything with.the passwords just said oh this teacher fancy this one as she had he's name as a password.

you have not been abused in any way.
#26
By your reluctance to go and speak to the police you make me suspicious that there is more to this than you are saying.
You have your answer.
Change passwords using a password manager and randomly generated passwords
Block any and all contact, take screenshots and build up a record of malicious behaviour especially threats.
Update security on PC and clear malware in case of spyware or keyloggers
Unless you fancy being Miss Marple then suggest you leave it to the pros and get it reported.

You can't just 'hack' into a laptop, they either have direct physical access and the password, are on your home network or your wife has clicked a dodgy email attachment and infected the machine herself (which could then give access).

as others have already said. It will make little difference but the OP will feel better about it.

years ago I got abused by a total stranger that threatened to kill me in front of witnesses. I reported it to the police who said that they couldn't do anything as he hadn't harmed me. They made a note of it in case I actually did end up dead tho !!!

lol... I'm still alive and kicking and never saw the guy again. I guess he wasn't too well and off his meds.
