Getting top US dollar for the GBP

I'm sure this would be of interest to everyone who bagged flights with expedia to the US.

Where do we get the best 'money for money' right now?

I'm flying off to San Diego next week and could really do with a place to exchange as close to $2 = £1!

I saw some deal on Tesco plastic card a month ago prepaid at $2 for £1 but then apparently that doesn't hold anymore..

Looking around, the best deal I can find is pretty appalling, almost $1.78 or lower. Looks like the dollar is going to continue get stronger and the pound weaken.

Are there any other ways to do this better? I am looking to change in excess of £1k so want to make the most of it...

I'm flying off Tuesday so home delivery may miss ;(

Will add rep as a thank u!!

Hi,

i suppose it is not possible you bank or have a credit card with nationwide ? if so take the card and get money out of a cash point as soon as you arrive if you need cash. By far the best rate you will get. I always use my Nationwide debit card - it is a visa debit and has no charges for exchange or cash advances.

Otherwise you lack of time is the issue. FairFX do a prepaid card that currently offers 1.84 but it takes 7-10 days to arrive.

so if you want to change cash, your best bet is probably the post office.

Do not forget to do QuidCo for Fair FX:
£8.20 for a valid new registration

Hope it helps

I don't like using cards when abroad so got my cash through http://www.iceplc.com. They have close to market leading rates and no delivery charges. I was impressed by the service and delivery was quick (2-3 days). Would recommend.

thanks all - v useful advice.

How long would it take to get a nationwide card? if i go into the branch with my passport and bills and deposit £1k on monday would i be able to get it by tuesday? :/ I guess no?

Sigh... always leaving things to the last minute. I may indeed have to go with the PO.

However... when I travelled in Europe, I've found exchange rates more favorable abroad when I arrived in my destination.

Could that b the case? Should I just bring loads of GBP with me and change to US$ when I get to California?
