Going wireless for dummies (like me)

Hi,

I have Tiscali broadband and want to go wireless in the house, as some of my housemates have laptops and want to access the net at the same time. Can anyone point me in the right direction as to a reasonable wireless set up.

Thanks,

James

The Zyxel Prestige 660HW or similar should do the job nicely, and if youre friends don't have wireless capabilities already on their laptops they'll need either a USB adapter or PCMCIA card.

Hope that helps.

I think there is some information on the Tiscali website which shows their own package but does explain the principle of what you need. The key thing is that you need to buy an adsl wireless modem/router and make sure it is supplied with a network cable to connect to your PC. You need to do this initially to "program" the modem/router.
Make sure you know what your Tiscali logon password is etc.
Disconnect existing Speedtouch/Thomsom ADSL modem.
Connect your new one to the phone line and pc and install any drivers as necessary.
Make sure you can connect to the internet via the network cable first before venturing on to try the wireless - there is a Windows Wizard for installing a wireless network.
Make sure you enable either WPA or WEP security to avoid next door having access to your network.

Alternatively PC World were doing a package where they come out and install it. Problem with this is the cost and if it goes wrong you won't have a clue what to do....

Thanks for the replies guys, I will certainly look at the Ebuyer.com one, my housemate suggested this:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Netgear-DGB111G-Wireless-Router-Adapter/dp/B000INDL50/ref=sr_1_18/203-0964815-0570334?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1184928727&sr=1-18

what do you think?

Netgear is a well known brand and you wont really go wrong with them, however the Zyxel is cheaper and better, if you prefer Amazon to eBuyer then check here for the Zyxel. Many have not heard of Zyxel, that's because they are relatively new to the consumer market, they have however been making professional grade stuff for a long time, Google for some reviews if you're unsure.
