Graphics card for PC

my PC Spec is

Windows XP
aMD XP 2.8
1024GB Ram
160GB hDD

I think my card is damaged, as when i go on anything animated or movie clips it either freezes, flashes black on and off, or goes black and white all over the screen. Its only started happening the last 2 weeks or so and its so annoying. Also it wouldnt play doom 3, sims 2 etc so i think its pretty sh*t. What do you think?

Its a NVIDIA GeForce FX 5200 and im 90% sure its PCI (not had a look in my PC for ages lol)

:::::::::::

What is the best AGP or PCI???
i always thought AGP was faster is that true or not?

I would like to be abe to play game such as doom 3, quake and all the good new FPS games.

I dont want THE BEST but i dont want anything rubbish. My pc spec is half decent and could cope nicely with a new graphix card. Maybe a new case too, since i have to rub wires together for it to power on. (i took the power button off for some reason)

Anyway any help would be good, a name of a card, links to nice deals etc.

You need to find out what onboard graphics card you have, and if the slot is either PCI or AGP.

Should usually be a sticker on your comp tower that tells you what you have got.
#2
Or you can run Belarc Advisor for a system audit: http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html That wil tell you quite a bit about your computer.
#3
Can't say which card is best in terms of AGP and PCI because your comp only takes cards that are PCI accessible. Can't have a comp that takes both AGP and PCI.

Whats your price limit?

Also wanting an internal or external floppy drive for my PC. if anyone has one

There aren't many PCI cards on the market now, so the only one I could find that fits your needs and is little bit over you budget is an upgrade to your current card:

GeForce FX 5200 PCI 256mb

http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/products/index.html?action=c2hvd19wcm9kdWN0X292ZXJ2aWV3&product_uid=66312&_LOC=UK

Should last you a while and will let you play Doom 3, UT2004, and most current games on almost full settings.

thanks, im trying on ebay to see if its cheaper lol..

na, they dont have that one. what about this one????

512MB nVidia GeForce 7300LE PCI-E Graphics Video Card
#11
Maybe a bit over budget, and do you know if you have PCI Express? That is twice as fast as AGP 8!!!!

This card is Bargain VALUE! If you combined 2 of these cards together, you'd have a graphics card with the capabilities a £250+ Gfx card would have. That's for like pro gamers. For home gaming (if you want to call it that), I'm sure 1 is sufficient!

HTH,

thanks matt..im not sure bout PCI express.....i think over the next few weeks im gonna take my pc out and look at it properly...need to change cases and stuff..this one is hopless....need a new dvd writer if anyone has one spare????
#13
I don't think you have PCI express...but I would have thought you'd have a AGP slot so would be better off with that type of card rather than a pci one.

Have you tried upgrading the driver to see if that fixes your problem..you can get the latest driver at this link
http://www.nvidia.com/object/winxp_2k_93.71.html
#14
You defo dont have PCI-E... And it is possible that you dont have AGP, so pull ya finger out and have a check! lol
#16
I have a feeling there's an AGP slot in yours, but you'll definitely need to at least take the cover off the unit and look at the motherboard.

Here's one with the same chipset and PCI slots with one AGP slot http://www.3dvelocity.com/reviews/kx4008x/kx4008x.htm [offset and on its own].

http://www.3dvelocity.com/reviews/kx4008x/KX400_8X.gif
If yours looks the same or very similar, it'll be easier to help find the right one :)

currychops - thanks im gonna try the drivers first

gary_rip - lol i know, if you saw my pc you may be put off too...lol today i think ill open it up and have a good look
#18

just looked and this is it

what would be the best one for this
#21
So you're now positive that it's the graphics card that is faulty?

If so I expect you just want a basic AGP graphics card..nothing fancy that will be used for the latest action games??

I'd advise a 256mb card like here
http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/specpage.html?NOV-FX5525

Also have a look on www.ebuyer.com

remember quidco

There's a few graphics cards here:-
http://www.scan.co.uk/todayonly/
mainly PCI-E, but there are some standard PCI & AGP mixed in down the list.
Not sure if they have what you want, but worth a look.
Cheers
#23
thanks guys..

yeah well im not GREAT with pc's but when i put games on ie desperate housewives. it is very slow and sometimes goes into a pixilated funny colour blotchy thing. so im asuming its the graphix lol...i want a better one than i have now tho
#24
much depends on your budget tazandsaz...but I'd go for a 256 mb as you need the extra memory for most modern games....although the action games will require a higher spec card than a 5500.
#25
Best card at Scan is

http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/ProductInfo.asp?WebProductID=150992

which is a 6600GT AGP card that used to retail at over £100. Will play games like Far Cry, Doom 3 etc no problem
